Environment Canada upgrading to a 1 Petaflop Cray Supercomputer

AFTER MONTHS OF PREPARATION, ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE CANADA,
IN COLLABORATION WITH SHARED SERVICES CANADA, WILL BE SWITCHING TO
A NEW HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING INFRASTRUCTURE AS OF TUESDAY,
AUGUST 15, 2017, BEGINNING WITH THE 12 UTC MODEL RUNS.

THE CURRENT IBM P7 SUPER-COMPUTER WILL BE REPLACED BY A HYBRID
IBM-CRAY SOLUTION, IN WHICH THE MAIN COMPUTING CORE WILL CONSIST OF
CRAY XC-40 MACHINES AND THE SURROUNDING PRE- AND POST-PROCESSING
AND NETWORKING WILL BE PROVIDED BY IBM EQUIPMENT. IN TERMS OF
COMPUTING CAPACITY, WE WILL REACH THE IMPORTANT PETAFLOP SCALE (ONE
MILLION GIGAFLOPS), WHICH WILL PUT US ON PAR WITH OTHER
INTERNATIONAL WEATHER CENTRES. THIS UPGRADE WILL PUT US IN A STRONG
POSITION FOR THE NEXT SERIES OF NUMERICAL PREDICTION TECHNOLOGICAL
TRANSFERS FROM RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TO OPERATIONS WHICH ARE
PLANNED FOR MANY YEARS TO COME, IN ORDER TO PROVIDE CONTINUALLY
IMPROVED WEATHER AND ENVIRONMENTAL PREDICTION SERVICES TO
CANADIANS, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND OTHER USERS AND PARTNERS.

ALTHOUGH WE DO NOT EXPECT ANY MAJOR ISSUES, IF USERS NOTICE ANY
MISSING PRODUCTS AS OF AUGUST 15, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT
US TO ENSURE THE PROPER DISSEMINATION OF SERVICES.

FOR SPECIFIC QUESTIONS CONCERNING THIS IMPLEMENTATION, PLEASE WRITE
TO (IN LOWER CASE): EC.PRODUCTION-INFO.EC(AT)CANADA.CA
