Please share your thoughts on this topic and what you think lies ahead for the gulf coast. Do you think that area will be ready for the next storm?
The remarkable radar images shown above were taken by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service Offices, New Orleans (Slidell, Louisiana) (KLIX) and Mobile, Alabama (MOB) as Hurricane Katrina moved to landfall in Mississippi at 9:45 AM CDT August 29, 2005. I can honestly say I cried seeing footage of it. Don't laugh at me. It was so horrible when that happened.

I was a senior in high school when it made landfall in New Orleans. We were sitting in class when the teacher turned on the TV and the news stations were talking about it making landfall and whatnot. Even though we were affected by Katrina as a Tropical Storm, it was still *shudders* .

I remember so much about that storm.Being online from 4 in the afternoon to 1 in the morning looking at the storm thinking this is crazy!I remember being in church services where I would actually get on the weather channel on my phone to get the 11 a.m. updates on Sundays and 8 p.m. updates on wednesdays and people asking me what it was doing, and everytime I said strengthening!I remember praying that people would leave New Orleans and not stay cause this would be catastrophic.I remember the NHC's extremely grave warnings right before it hit.Saying that basically everything in the path of this storm was going to die, plants, trees, animals, and people.
I remember watching Brian Williams report live and seeing people thirsty standing on I-10 and on rooftops for days while FEMA seemed to do nothing and I remember being so sad I cried and being so mad I cried.I remember pure disbeliefe,in the storms power and our governments failer to act quickly. I remember going down to Gulfport a few weeks after the storm with a reliefe team, seeing the smiles on peoples faces as we handed out canned food, water, and ice.But knowing that was all they had. However, the thing I will never forget was the smell. The smell of death, fish, cats, dogs, shrimp, and at points a unmistakable smell of dead people that were not found yet. That storm changed my life,it changed how I veiw things, not only weather, but life and made me relize how really blessed I am.I remember Katrina, how could I forget? -------------------- For pictures and footage of severe weather shot by my stormchase team & I,as well as forecasts for severe weather events log onto The SWIFT Website

Remember very well, specially the previous 72h, when almost everybody was seeing it a very high possability of strenghning and the N.O. Path. very sad week for your FEMA intervention... I remember like it was yesterday, I still cry if I see old footage, I live in south mississippi and was very lucky I still had a roof over my head there were homes all around me that were distroyed. And no I still don't think New Orleans is ready for anything like Katrina they still don't have the Levee systems fixed, for that matter I don't think you could ever be 100% prepared for anything like Katrina. -------------------- I have not failed, I have just found 10,000 ways that do not work.

If anyone is interested, here is the Katrina thread. It is truly amazing to go back and read again. When it exploded that morning, we were all in shock.

I sat in my home a 100 miles west of NO and all I could think is better them than us. Rita was payback for those thoughts - my SIL lost her house in Iberia Parish. I have lived on the Gulf for 34 years, 6 years in Pascagoula, MS and 28 in Lafayette, LA.
My cousin and a friend of his took his boat to NO the next day and spent the next few pulling people off of roofs. They kept after it, even, after the state people told them to stop. I was hired to work the clean-up after Rita hit in NO. It was a ghost town. It was a dump. We worked 11 hours a day, 7 days a week. We finally got Thanksgiving off. -------------------- Kevin Arceneaux

I think we will all remember Katrina, just as we remember 9/11 or any other historical event
There was something much different about Katrina, obviously, than any other storm .. just weight of the storm on public officials, the failure of government.. AND the ignored cities in Mississippi and other states that got hit with Katrina are also still trying to recover.. The storm was an epic event.. One for all of our memories. It's frightening to think that Gustav and or Hanna could make us forget how bad Katrina was.. A NEW storm (even if it's less powerful) may in some way be worse for the psyche of the region.. Still recovering, only three years later, threatened again Some that leave may think twice about coming back this time -------------------- |

Truly a historic hurricane, in an once in a lifetime hurricane season. Truly amazing to watch the unnerving power of weather. As well as truly devastating impact on a city struck by hurricanes in the past. Sad story, but we can all and hopefully have learned from this storm.
