The Russian have drilled into the lake beneath one of the Antartic glaciers and extracted water from the lake - water that is believed to have been cut off from the rest of the world for the past several million years. The have found forms of live that do not appear to have any connection to the forms of life that are know to currently exist.

Let's hope there aren't any long-dormant mammal compatible pathogens down there...
