STATION NOTES.

April continued the trend of the cold spring. The month ended with a cold spell with snow lying 1 cm on the morning of the 29th with the A57 Snake Pass blocked and the A629 Woodhead Pass very difficult. Sunshine was above average and rainfall well over the average 90.4mm.

The recorded temperatures were just into Double Figures during the day and at night temperatures were into single figures with an air frost on the morning of the 10th. Throughout the month 12 ground frosts were recorded. The real drop in temperatures occurred after the 20th when it became cold for the end of April. On the 16th Ice Pellets were observed together with small hail. Sleet and snow fe3ll on the 25th On the 26th Sleet, Snow and Small Hail together with thunder which was heard during one of the downpours. The 27th gave sleet, snow and ice pellets. The 28th gave rain and sleet. The morning of the 29th gave us in North Sheffield 1 cm of lying snow which had cleared by lunch on the 30th we had small hail and sleet.

The wind was mostly from a westerly quadrant with a wind speed of 42.5 mph recorded on the 6th. Rainfall was above average as was sunshine with the lengthen days 13.21 hours were recorded on the 20th.

STATION NOTES.

May was an average month with average temperatures. The rainfall was just below average as was the recorded hours of sunshine..

The month started with a grass temperature of -3.2c on the morning of the 1st. The warm days were the 8th maximum 23.8 c and the 9th maximum 23.0 c. Contrasting this you have a variation with the maximum of 9.9c on the 25th

Rainfall was average again with 15.9 mm recorded on the 21st and 15.6 mm on the 10th

With the lengthening days 14.02 hours of sunlight was recorded on the 9th and 12.33 hours on the 8th

STATION NOTES.

The month was dominated by winds from a northerly quadrant. Lack of Sunshine and above average rainfall.

The month started off cool and then the 5th to the 11th inclusive was nice and warm with a maximum of 25.3c recorded on the 7th.

After this period the temperatures were pegged back by cloud migrating inland from the North Sea. Overall the month ended up slightly on the cool side.

Sunshine was in short supply 96.05 hours equating to 71% of the average with 15.37 hours recorded on the 6th.

Rainfall was high has we had some impressive Thundery Showers a total of 119.0 mm was record which is 167% of the average no rain fell until 9th. Then on 10th 14.1 mm was recorded, the 12th 15.6 mm, the 13th 12.3mm and 19.2 mm on the 16th

STATION NOTES.

July started on a cool note with a minimum temperature of 8.3 c on the morning of the 4th we had a brief warm spell lasting from the 6th to the 11th. It became hot on the 19th to the 24th with a maximum of 30.1 during the day on the 19th and 19.1c the following night.

Rainfall was in scare supply 41.5mm 66% of the average. Sunshine was exactly on the mark for July and no storms were recorded in the month

STATION NOTES.

August was a month when temperatures were almost on the average and rainfall was 100% with 69mm of rainfall. However sunshine was over the average with 177 hours of sunshine which is 1355 of the average with the 16th giving 13.15 hours of sunshine.

The month started on a cool note then the 3rd to the 7th gave us a warm spell, then from the 8th to the 11th it turned cooler again, ten again the 12th to the 18th was warm then the temperatures climbed higher with a maximum of 26.6 c on the 23rd.

Thunder was limited to one flash and rumble on the 27th as at 17.00 hours and quite a deluge with 12.6 mm of rainfall recorded.

STATION NOTES.

September was a mild month with above average sunshine and rainfall almost on the monthly mean. The winds were predominantly from a southerly quadrant bringing the warmth. Sunshine was above average and rainfall was just below average.

The month started on a mild note and on the 6th a maximum of 26.8 was recorded. On the 9th two cool days followed on the 13th a maximum of 26.7 c was recorded. This spell of warmth created a mean monthly temperature of 15.8c this was well short of the 17.3c recorded in September 2006.

On the 3rd 17.1 mm of rain fell and even during the storm of the 13th we only had 8.7mm of rainfall although we had large hail falling. The storm lasted from 18.40 hours to 19.45 hours and was an intense storm with vivid lightning. On the morning of the 16th at 03z we had another storm although I slept through it which gave 3 mm of rainfall

STATION NOTES.

October was a dry month with average temperatures sunshine was just below the average. The first 3 days of the month saw cold nights this was indicated by a grass minimum of -2.7 c on the 3rd. The 4th therefore gave us a warm day with a maximum of 17.1c. After the 26th it became mild with a high minimum of 12.8c during the night of the 29th.

The month was one of the driest on record with 29.4mm recorded it was well beaten by 2007 which produced 18mm. The 3 days 11th to the 13th inclusive gave 15.9mm with 9.0mm falling on the 12th.

STATION NOTES

November was very wet and cold with average sunshine and no stormy weather.

October’s mild weather finished abruptly with a fall in temperatures on the 1st and the cold spell lasted until the 11th. It became very mild briefly from the 12th to the 16th The very mild spell was short lived with the weather turning cold again from the 16th right until the end of the month. During the month a total of 21 ground frosts were recorded with a minimum of -8.5c on the 29th and an air frost of -1.5 on the 29th and -1.4c on the 30th

Very little rain was recorded until the 8th when 11.1mm fell. However the 15th from the 17th until the 22nd it was very wet. The 21st was a wet day with 44.4mm recorded. On the morning of the 9th we had snow cover of 0.5 cm and on the 18th snow showers were observed.

December was a very mild dry month with a lack of sunshine.

Winds were from a Southerly Quadrant with 11 mornings with calm conditions @ 09Z

Rainfall was 75% of the average with 11 dry days within the month with the most rain recorded on the 27th 8.4mm.

Ground frosts were recorded on 17 mornings with a minimum of -7.2c on the 5th

STATION NOTES.

January was an interesting month. The 26th saw an ice day the maximum temperature recorded was 0.6c and the minimum -1.1. Throughout the month the temperatures worked out just above the means for the area. During the month 15 ground frosts were recorded. Snow showers occurred on the 13th.It was a dry month with the rainfall 66% of the local average. Sunshine was almost on the average.

Wind was the feature of the month at 05.51z on the 11th a gust of 72.5 mph was recorded; the mean wind speed was 49.4 mph.

STATION NOTES.

February 2017 was a mild month with average rainfall with a distinct lack of sunlight. There was no snow cover although we had 3 days when intermittent snow showers were observed. Again the feature of the month was high winds of the 23rd.

The month started with the first 3 days having mild temperatures then the temperatures fell away on the 5th. Air frosts were recorded on the 6th and 7th, 10 ground Frosts were recorded within the month.

Sunshine was distinctly in short supply 45.6 hours of sunlight recorded this is 605 of the average with 9 sunless days.

The barometer fell to 975mb on the 23rd with a gust of 59.9 mph and a 10 minute mean wind speed of 44.3 mph at 12.20 hours during the passage of the storm.

STATION NOTES.

March was a very mild month with above average sunshine and rainfall. The month started on a cool note with ground frosts on the first two days, with a maximum of 6.1 and on the 22nd when a maximum of 6.3c was recorded. The temperatures reached with mid teens on the 14th and 15th but the maximum of 18.0c was recorded on the 30th. Overall the temperatures were above average. The winds were mostly from a westerly quadrant throughout the month.

March started on a wet note with 36.6 mm falling in the first 4 days with no rainfall on one of the days. The middle of the month produced 0.9mm. Sunshine was above average even though 6 sunless days were recorded. When the high pressure settled over the country on the 24th 10.44 hours of sunshine was recorded and on the 25th 11.38 hours were recorded.

STATION NOTES.

April was a very dry sunny month with temperatures just over the average. There were two exceptional days as far as temperature differences were recorded. On the 8th the maximum was 19.3c and the minimum 2.6c giving a difference of 16.7c. However on the 9th a maximum of 21.3c was recorded and a minimum of 8.4 with a difference of 12.9c.

This was indeed a dry month with a total of 19.2mm recorded with is 31% of the local average. The 1st gave a recorded fall of 0.3mm and then from the 2nd until 15th inclusive no rain was recorded. On the 16th 3.3mm was recorded the 17th and 18th dry 4.2mm on the 19th then again 4 dry days with the month ending with 3 dry days.

Sunshine was just over the average 101% giving 130.00 hours of recorded sunlight with only 1 sunless day during the month. The sunshine total on the 8th was 12.16 hours.

Snow and small hail showers fell on the early afternoon of the 25th and 26th, although there was no snow covering.
