Today the sun was up in Barrow, AK, the northernmost town in the U.S. from about 12:35 PM to 1:50 PM. It will not come up again until January 23. On December 21, the winter solstice, they have about 3 hours of civil twilight, where it is light enough to do things outdoors without artificial lighting, assuming it is not cloudy. However, Barrow is almost always cloudy and this morning they were -18 F with freezing fog. These are ideal conditions for cold and overcast weather lovers.

Back in Lake Forest, CA, it gets dark early too and tonight's sunset is within seconds of its time on the shortest day. By tomorrow it sets earlier than on the shortest day by about half a minute. The earliest sunset here is around December 4 or 5, and it will be about 4 minutes earlier than today. Meanwhile sunrise will continue to get later after December 21 through about January 7 or 8. The further north you go (south of the Arctic Circle) the closer the dates of earliest sunset and latest sunrise are to the winter solstice. You can find more info as well as a program to calculate your earliest sunset and latest sunrise dates here.

The weird behavior is due to the Equation of Time, which is the horizontal component of the analemma. By January 23, when Barrow gets its first sunrise of 2016, the sunset in Orange County, CA will be about 26 minutes later than today, but so will the sunrise.
