Okay, sounds fine to me.

As to the weather channel, from those rules it is very clear that without written permission you may not post thei images. Fine with me, I will not post any images from there without their expressed written permission in the future and I encourage others to do the same.

I assume accuweather's images may be posted here without need of specific permission?

For the benefit of others regarding NOAA/NWS/weather.gov "The information on government servers are in the public domain, unless specifically annotated otherwise, and may be used freely by the public so long as you do not 1) claim it is your own (e.g. by claiming copyright for NWS information -- see below), 2) use it in a manner that implies an endorsement or affiliation with NOAA/NWS, or 3) modify it in content and then present it as official government material. You also cannot present information of your own in a way that makes it appear to be official government information.."

It is fine to post as long as it is cited... As with any copyrighted material. It however, may not be reproduced. Can be quite confusing with the gray areas in between though.

WOW! You guys had quite the storm! Congrats and enjoy it!

I was watching the deformation banding earlier on radar. VERY impressive banding was over Maine.

I'm still waiting, by the way, for proof that Tyler altered the map in question to change the data (the map has a dynamic key, so yes, the key is different right now vs. the night that he posted it).

This originally was not a matter of any "altered data" at all. It is a matter of re-branding the product with the name "MesoCast", which even upon extensive search would yield a very low chance of finding the original source.

Whenever I post a product, even an image in the public domain such as an NWS image, I always AT LEAST include a note saying what it is. e.g. "12Z GFS snowfall map", etc.

But really it isn't even a matter of that! Not including a link to the source would be one thing, but Tyler has RE-LABELED a map created by someone else, IMPLYING that it is his OWN work, where it clearly is NOT.

Now, although Tyler has done this four times to the same product, this IS the first time he has been warned of the issue. Hopefully it will be the last.

With the above statements, I rest my case, and beg of you all to do the same for the time being.

I should go back and see if Tyler did this last winter too. Probably too late, but could add to the discontent if he has gotten away with this before.

I may not have time tonight though.

As I mentioned, I've searched all posts on the forums for "MesoCast". There were four instances:

http://forums.accuweather.com/index.php?ac...ghlite=MesoCast

That is all the information we have at this time.

Could there be other issues? Certainly. But in the interest of staying on topic, I believe we have covered all the information necessary in this thread. I suggest we start to wind down this discussion.

Good find, I've saved this image as well for later use/reference.

I've edited my post above. There were actually 4 instances total.

I guess that it should also be mentioned in here for the record that Tyler has posted "his Precision MesoCast" on February 12th as well. That was the only other instance.

http://forums.accuweather.com/index.php?sh...mp;#entry409809

EDIT:

There were actually a couple instances before this as well, where he also failed to note the source. Here are the search results:

http://forums.accuweather.com/index.php?ac...ghlite=MesoCast

This makes for a total of four posts of the map of same origin, all altered with his logos, and no source of the original data.

That is personal opinion. Also, it depends on how you view it. Do you think he is more valuable due to his moderator status, or because of the content of his posts. IMO, post content should be higher priority over status -- especially for someone who was chosen fairly quickly in a scramble to get staff to help out Jesse soon after the forum was created.

Because I am too lazy to go thru all 5 pages of this thread, can someone explain to me what the heck 'Precision Mesocast' Is?? Is this Tyler's new theme?

I pretty much explain here:

QUOTE(AR)
I was the one who originally pointed this out in the thread. Really, I meant it just to be between him and I. I really don't think there is much that he has done to deserve removal of his moderator status.

I just didn't like him calling the 18Z NAM's snowfall map the "Precision MesoCast". On Mr. Barker's site, it is labeled as the "NCEP meso-ETA Model Forecast (06 and 18Z)". What he means by "meso-ETA" is the NAM (North American Mesoscale). Earl just never changed them to say "NAM". Where Tyler's "MesoCast" title came from in its entirety, I don't know, other than it being a phrase spewed from his imagination.

I just doesn't appeal to me to see people "prettying up" maps and calling them something different. I, as many others, would have just posted the map and/or a link to it.

It's one thing to just post the map, another thing to put a different title on it, especially a fairly misleading one.

With that said, I feel we should now drop this topic before it causes more trouble than needed. I feel that this incident has probably showed Tyler how many feel about his posts. Hopefully he understands all that has been posted here.

He just made it up. He uses "Precision -whatever-cast" for pretty much everything. Kindof annoying, IMO, and makes me wonder what he has renamed in the past. I like to have access to the source of things that are posted for future reference (if they are publicly available). Even things like "FutureCast" that he posts, although that is actually what it is called, probably should not be posted since it is a purchased item. It's just like making copies of music or movies and uploading them online.

I explained earlier that the name "MesoCast" is part of the model's name. The model is a form of the ETA; specifically the Meso-ETA model.

There is nothing wrong with using the image as long as the data on the web page is sourced. I have the logo and the Harris WeatherCaster information bordering the image. If you look on the blog, that's where I got it from.

In my signature I have the source for the meso model. I'm sorry if some members took the wording "MesoCast" as my own model, as I was refering to the Meso-ETA model. From now on I will use the full name so everyone knows what I am referencing.

I will be sure to add this model to the Model FAQ thread as soon as possible. smile.gif

The maps are simply from the 06Z and 18Z NAM. Nothing special, and no where other than where you use it do I see "MesoCast". Stop re-branding products. Why couldn't you just post the map?

When I originally pointed this out in the discussion thread, I did not mean it as a personal attack. Just want that to be noted. He replied to my post with:

QUOTE
It is a high resolution model with ETA roots. It is very similar to A.D.O.N.I.S. MicoCast. I use an altered version with different formulas for the snow totals.

Which is clearly either a lie, or he is getting it from someone else that steals the maps or mislabels them.

Who is at fault? I don't know, and I really don't care, but I simply do not like seeing people pass off maps as their own without providing links to the original source.

When you have something like these snow maps, and you post them without providing info where they are from, you are just leaving people in the dark. It's nice to know where you get the resources from for future reference.

In this case, I just so happened to notice the similarities because I often use these maps, and I could verify it because I knew the source. How often do people "steal" other maps that they find that no one else recognizes as being copied? THAT is the importance of noting the source on a map that CLEARLY was not made from scratch.

Now I simply suggest we let Tyler read this thread, and we all drop the issue unless further discussion is required. Thanks.

"PRECISION MESOCAST"?!

You can use photoshop to cover up WxCaster's logo?! Wow. Dude, grow up.

Also, it is just the off-hour NAM snowfall map.

Anyway, you just used the standard 10:1 ratio map. Here is the map using a different calculation method:

[at//tachment=35482:image004.jpg]

Troughing is turning negative, but this would turn sharply negative much too late for the MA.

I called for <1" for philly yesterday, looks like I am on target.

Indeed. This is why I rarely even read these forums anymore. Too many people here wishcast. It's fun, but for some reason people think that the models are completely wrong WITHIN ~12hrs of an event? Get a grip. They initialize with current satellite data. They don't just guess.

The energy at the base of the trough is what you need to watch. Where that hits the coast is where it will really bomb out.

Light to moderate snow here all morning. Less than an inch total.

Current RUC shows surface low will close off the SNJ coast. Precip will continue to fill in over eastern PA through the afternoon.

Unfortunately for you SNE guys... shows lots of RAIN.

All I know is that not one model other than the Euro has produced decent results for me so far this season.

EURO has done great until recently. Fell off a cliff if you look at a graph of verification results.
