100 Funnel of Love-Cyndi Lauper AMER
Actually from late 2016, this rollicking tune was a cover of an old country song and a lot of fun to listen to.
99 Dirty Laundry-Carrie Underwood C&W
A carryover from late 2016, this had a good classic rock feel to it. No, it is not a cover of the 1982 Don Henley classic.
98 Help in Hard Times-Carrie Newcomer
a sincere folk tune that went well with winter
97 Dusty Old Man-Tift Merritt
A melodic Americana song with an autumnal sound

94 Here Come the Girls-Trombone Shorty
a jaunty cover of an old 1960s Memphis jam
93 Good and Gone-Patty Griffin
A haunting song and one of many from this folk singer’s 2015 album that made my chart
92 Gravity-Infamous Stringdusters
a melodic bluegrass tune that was popular last winter/spring
91 House of Mercy-Sarah Jarosz
a haunting, melodic song from her 2016 album with a fall/winter sound
90 Don't Weep for Me-Blue Highway
An engaging bluegrass tune with a strong banjo hook and a story about a guy who had committed a crime of passion
89 It’s Not Right-Jenny Jarnagan
A carryover from late 2016, this adult alternative song of self-affirmation was a big hit on my chart.
88 Humbled-Leann Rimes
a country-rock ballad with a strong hook
87 See You on the Way Down-Renee Wahl AMER
a tune with a strong hook, this should have been a hit.
86 Surrender Under Protest-Drive-By Truckers AMER
An alt-country song with a strong hook and an ominous, late-autumn sound
85 Astral Plane-Valerie June
a folk-sounding ballad with a melodic hook and a late winter sound
84 Shakedown-Valerie June
A fun tune with a summery, classic rock sound
83 So Much Going On-Colleen Kattau FOLK
a reflective folk ballad with a wintry sound
82 Water under the Bridge-Adele
The fourth single from her Grammy-winning 2015 album, this had a strong hook.
81 Atlas Choking-Richard Shindell AMER
A sardonic folk tune with a strong hook and an autumnal feel—a carryover from late 2016
80 I’ll Think about You-We Are Messengers
a slow piano ballad from the movie The Shack

75 Wonderful Woman-Chuck Berry
Sticking to his trademark 1950s sound, this song from his final album had a good boogie rock sound .
74 Chained to the Rhythm-Katy Perry featuring Skip Marley
One of the few songs by Perry that I have enjoyed, it was refreshing that she was singing about something other than sex or partying.
73 All the Trouble-Lee Ann Womack
A fall 2017 song, this had a bluesy Americana ballad feel—it was about a person enduring a hard time.
72 City of Stars-Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone
A romantic duet from the movie La La Land, thisd had an autumnal feel and a good piano hook.
71 Dandelion Wishes-John Adams
A melodic song with a springlike hook
70 Easy Target-John Mellencamp
With some sardonic lyrics, this had a strong hook and commented on our society’s all-too-apparent need for scapegoats.
69 My Happiness-Alice S
Full disclosure: this is my niece—she is a gifted musician, and this reflective piano ballad had a strong hook.
68 Today-Brad Paisley
a country song about a guy being in the moment—he was probably singing about his wedding day.
67 Deadwood-Toni Braxton
A retro-sounding R&B song, this had sincere lyrics and a strong hook. too bad it isn’t 1994 because it would have been a big hit then. Unfortunately, the song is not about sex, so the tune doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance on top-40 radio.
66 While We’re Here-Catie Curtis
another song about enjopying the present and not getting caught up in the strife of our divisive culture
65 Angela-The Lumineers
A piano ballad with sincere lyrics and a strong hook, it had an autumnal sound.
64 Sweet Florida-Elaine Mahon
A folk song with a strong hook, this was popular on the Roots Music folk chart last spring.
63 Miss America-Ingrid Michaelson featuring Sara Bareilles
A reflective piano ballad, this should have been big on the adult contemporary, as well as pop, chart.
62 Julie-Rhiannon Giddens
A well-written song that served as a musical snapshot about Southern life during the Civil War
61 Mexico, Tequila and Me-Alan Jackson
a song I charted from Jackson’s stellar 2015 album, this should have been a big country hit. Unfortunately, Jackson has been—like George Strait—kicked out of mainstream country because he wasn’t “bro-sounding” or macho enough.
60 Silver Skies Blue-Judy Collins/Ari Hest
from her 2016 collaboration with Hest, this had an early-1970s folk sound and a strong, springlike hook. I actually first heard this in August 2016 but decided to wait until last spring to chart it because it had a late spring sound.
59 Not Dark Yet-Shelby Lynne & Allison Moorer
A cover of a 1997 Bob Dylan song, this had an autumnal sense of foreboding, as well as a strong hook.
58 What about Us-Pink
A haunting, ominous message song, this didn’t pass muster with pop programmers because it wasn’t about sex or hedonism.
57 I Know-John Gorka
a sincere rerecording of a late-1980s song of his, this folk tune had a strong hook.
56 States I’m In-Bruce Cockburn
A tune with a jazzy sound, this folk song shows that the folk veteran still has it.
55 What You’ve Been Looking For-Carrie Newcomer FOLK
another sincere offering from her 2016 album Season of Mercy
54 Letter to the Editor-Thievery Corporation/Racquel
an alternative hip-hop sound with a strong hook

From her Americana/folk album, this had a strong hook and autumnal sound.

A bluesy rock/R&B number with a Memphis sound
51 Lonely Girl-Chelsea Williams
An adult alternative song with a catchy hook

There is never suppression when a Great Lakes Cutter comes.
