STATION NOTES.
December 2005 started on a wet note then quickly dried up, as a weak Atlantic didn’t provide any really vigorous depressions.
Winds were dominate from the Southerly Quadrant once again but only just as the Weak Atlantic allowed several Northerly flows throughout the month. The only noteworthy windy day was the 15th when 33.8 mph was recorded.
Temperatures hit double figures on six days the highest being 12.8c on the 11th and 10.8c on the tenth. The lowest was on the 28th just above freezing at 1.5C. The lowest temperature of the year were recorded on the 29th –3.2c.
Rainfall started out quite well with the highest of 15 mm recorded on the 1st. There was no rain after the 9th until 27th when 1 mm was recorded and this was snow melt. The month was dry with only 29 mm recorded in total, which is just 34% of the local average.
Snowfall was rare again. Occurring on 2 days towards the end of the month and the snow was generally light. Heavy Snow Forecast for the 30th didn’t turn up the milder air moving much quicker than expected.

STATION NOTES.

February 2006 was a month when the temperatures were just above the average.

The first 3 days of the month saw calm winds, mist and low temperatures these recovered with a warm spell from the 12th through to the 19th.

The 21st to the 24th saw a spell with snow and on the 24th the snow was laying on the ground, and falling at 09z when I observed. A further feature was 12 days of ground frost during the month.

The sunshine for the month was low with 54.43 hours recorded during the lengthening days of this month. There were a total of 10 sunless days.

The key feature however was the lack of rainfall during the month with only 42% of the average recorded but for the rain that fell on the 23rd 15mm in total we would have had a spectacularly low figure.

As we move into March there is no let up in the cold spell

STATION NOTES.
March 2006 was a cold month with the temperatures well down on what could be expected for this month. The mean maximum was –1.8c whilst the mean minimum was only –0.1 the mean worked out at 4.9.
If it were not for the run of winds from a southerly quadrant commencing on the 25th the month would have been even colder. We had air frosts on 9 days during the month.
A feature of this month was that we had above average rainfall 81 mm giving us 127% of our average with a total of 21 wet days throughout the month but the maximum recorded on any one day was 11 mm
On the evening of the 3rd a slow moving narrow band of snow brought heavy snow in the evening and I had to go out in the car it was a struggle luckily the trough was dying and the roads cleared within a couple of hours.

STATION NOTES.
July 2006 was the Hottest July ever recorded, beating 2003, 1995 and 1976. There were several days with high temperatures. There were 16 consecutive days where the maximum temperature was above 25c the 15th through to the 31st
Rainfall was 46mm which was 71% of the local averages with a total of 31mm falling in the downpour on the 2nd during the storm which lasted from 19.30 hours – 21.30 hours. The storm of the 22nd gave another 11mm and apart from a 4mm falling in 3 days there were dry periods.
Temperatures were amazing the month started hot cooled down after the 6th before the next long hot spell started on the 16th and lasted 13 days. The first spell lasted six days despite a Thunderstorm on the 2nd. Temperatures peaked on the first with a notable 30.8c. The coolest spell started a few days later with the lowest maximum temperature being 21.2c on the 8th.
Then the heat started slowly to build on the 16th. The 17th marked three days above 29.8c. The highest temperature was 32.7c on the 17th. A slow cooling down followed this before temperatures rose again peaking at 31.6c on the 26th. Then they fell slowly dropping down to 23.5c on the 31st.
Thunder Storms occurred on two days. An early evening storm on the 2nd which produced 31mm of rain, this was a huge multi cell storm. The storm of the 22nd again was heavy but with less rain and in the late afternoon

STATION NOTES.

September 2006 was the warmest September on record. In September 1999 the mean maximum was 20.7c but this September saw that record broken with a mean maximum of 21.2c against the average of 17.1c. The mean minimum was 13.4c compared with the average and this combination gave a mean of 17.5c against the average of 13.5c. Despite this the last day of the month saw a grass minimum of 2.0c which indicated that it was after all autumn.
The winds were from the easterly quadrant on 15 days of the month at 09.0z. Rainfall was slightly above average with a fall of 13.0mm on the 22nd of the month.
The event of note was the afternoon of 14th just before 15.00 hours it went very dark and at 15.03 hours mayhem broke loose. The rain poured for a 10 minute period but at 15.03 hours a wind gust of 40.3 mph was recorded and at 15.15 hours it cleared again to blue sky. Further north however in Leeds 28 miles away a tornado was reported all I recorded was the passing of this vigorous front.

STATION NOTES.

As I spent part of October in Kenya flying to Nairobi on the 17th it was great to have the station linked to the computer.

The highlight of the month was the fact that a new record was set for the mean maximum which was 10.6c and beats the one set in 2001 of 10.1c

On the 16th of the month the diurnal range of the temperature was most interesting, I recorded a maximum of 12.7c and a minimum of 11.9c with a range of only 0.8c

December 2006 was a warm month but did not beat the mean maximum of 10.1c recorded in December 2000. The mean minimum was lower 5.6 than the 6.1c in 2004. The mean was not a record breaker either.
Winds dominated from a southerly quadrant on 18 days on the month. Calm conditions did occur five times as the High settled over the Country.
Temperatures were well above normal. The Highest being 14.0C on the 14th nearly matched by the 5th and the 13th with 13.7c. The coldest day was on the 22nd when -0.2c was recorded this was the only air frost of the month however there was a ground frost on 11 days during the month.
Rainfall was just over the average with a period from the 17th to the 26th when no rain fell when the pressure was high with a maximum of 1045 mb recorded on the 22nd.

STATION NOTES.
The month was dominated by winds from the warm quadrants namely 8 days from the South East, 2 days from the South, 5 days from the South West, 10 days from the West and 5 days from the North West. At the end of the month from the 22nd through to the 27th the winds switched to a more Northerly direction. A maximum wind speed of 45 mph was recorded during the storm of the 18th
Temperatures were above normal. The Highest being 13.6c on the 19th. Double figures occurred on 18 days during the month The coldest day was -0.1c which was recorded on the 24th this was the only occasion during the month that an air frost was recorded. Ground frosts were only recorded on 8 days during the month.
Rainfall was well above normal. 150 mm which is 185% of the local average a total of 25mm fell during the storm of the 18th This storm commenced with a low pressure of 977mb and the following morning it had risen to 1011mb after the passing of the storm. The strong winds occurred during the afternoon when the maximum gust of 45 mph was recorded at 15.30 hours and this resulted in Lorries being blown over. In 5.5hours from 10.00 hours to 15.30 hours 19mm of rain fell. The wettest spell of the month was from the 16th to the 21st when 79 mm of rain fell this is almost the monthly January average rainfall.
Snowfall was rare during the month falling on four days On the 21st on the higher ground snow fell closing both the A57 Snake Pass and the A628 Woodhaed Pass although at my location no snow settled but I had a mixture of rain, sleet, snow and small hail during the day.
Lightening was observed in the evening of the 20th.

STATION NOTES.
February 2007 saw temperatures were well above normal; this month was the second warmest in the last 50 years. The means were 3.2c on average above the normal for the month and the mean minimum was only exceeded by 1998s value of 4.9c against 4.8c for this months. Double figures occurred on the first 4 days of the month. Then began a cold spell with a maximum of only 2.2c recorded on the 8th this was only a short 4 day spell.
Rainfall was just above normal at 112% with the total of 12 mm on the morning of the 10th including snow melt from the previous day. The first 8 days of the month were dry.
Snowfall was rare with snow only falling on two days and only giving a slight covering one day on the 8th. Further snow began on the 9th at 13.30 then turned moderate at 20.00 hours and ended at midnight this gave a covering of 1 cm. Sadly the next mornings milder weather melted all the snow away.

STATION NOTES.

March 2007 was a mild month this was indicated by the fact that mean temperatures were over 2 degrees above the average.

Just like the previous year we had a mini cold spell lasting 3 days giving a minimum air temperature of -0.9c on the 21st. throughout the 18th we had showers of both snow and small hail giving just a light covering that soon melted.

High maximum gusts of 35.9 mph and 35.6 mph were recorded on the 17th and 18th of the month.

The feature of note however was the fact the month was again a dry one with rainfall of only 41mm falling which is 64% of the average.

The days are now getting longer and 9.72 hours of sunshine was recorded on the 21st.
