The Ottawa Airport is back to its old bad habits of undermeasuring snow once again especially when you see reports of nearly 30 cm in Barrhaven and nearly 40 cm in the rural south and southeast basically 5-10 km form the Airport.
Each storm you can definitely notice where they overmeasure and those who are undermeasuring. Both downtown and Airport ones are certainly part of the undermeasuring ones. This post has been edited by Cre47: Dec 27 2012, 07:40 PM |

I'd say that my area's sitting somewhere from above 25cm to just under 30. It's basically stopped now and I don't think we'll see any more measurable snow. As much as I would have liked to experience Montreal's 45-50cm, the complete lack of wind here has made everything look caked and covered - a look that I could more than live with through a week or two of snow-less weather
Plus, the heavy winds and sticky snow from the first storm has plastered snow onto a lot of surfaces and it's now frozen solid, probably until the thaw or spring. Trees here look like something out of a Group of Seven painting - one side brown and the other completely white! So this storm has been a total success for me, considering that I expected no more than 15cm and ended up with double. I'm gonna take a little break from the form and the models to enjoy the snow until something comes up, but I just want to thank all of you for contributing in your own ways to tracking this storm and I hope we'll track many, many more this winter! Enjoy the snow! |

Final score for my area - 50mm water/eq. .. that's about 50cm (maybe more but i can't tell - too much drifted snow on top of it).
cumul_swqc_20121227.png ( 81.7K )
Number of downloads: 3Montreal got 45 at Dorval, and 39 downtown. In Laval, they stopped all transportation (Bus and train). Same thing in Montreal where there was a hill to climb - it was impossible for about anyone to climb them and too dangerous with car sliding down while trying to climb the hills. Areas on south shore received about 40-45cm - maybe more at some places in the Eastern Township. Reports are not all in yet and for some areas it is still snowing. Strange stuff happened tonight - after the snowfall stopped, the dew point rised and we had freezing mist in many places around Montreal. It's still going on at the moment but very light currently. Roads are getting better quite fast - there's not much traffic so the snow teams are getting it easy to push all that snow aside. Very nice storm for us, yet 2000 homes in the Laurentian region lost power this afternoon and there's still 350 without power since last Friday's storm. THey only got 5-10cm of snow but the damage came from the high wind in some areas where trees were still loaded by the snow/ice from last storm. 45cm in ONE DAY?? Wow...I'd love to experience that. Would completely shut down our city here. You guys are certainly more used to it, but I imagine even Montreal is struggling to function properly under that quick dumping. Got that right. Sections of highway and a couple of bridges were closed temporarily. But man it was an AWESOME storm. Even city buses were getting stuck in the snow. Shot some video last night during the best snow, about 35 dbz over my house. Rates were about 2cm/hr at this point. This probably lasted 40 minutes or so. Nice winds too that you can hear if you turn it up, along with my sniffling haha. 1080p for your viewing pleasure.
Enjoy, and hopefully something else will come by soon (although it sure doesn't look like it)! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTXbSoX86Fw This post has been edited by harrisale: Dec 27 2012, 11:20 PM |

I'd like to report that my house received 20cm from this storm. I've measured in 5 areas, all where there was no drifting at all. I am very happy with this, considering the forecast was for 5-10cm!

^ If you looked at the radar during the storm, the HWY 89 area and north actually fared better accumulation wise than many areas to the south. We had an initial band Friday night set up while areas to the south had nothing. Then early Saturday morning we had heavy enhancement off GB which affected areas mostly north of HWY 89. For example, the Meaford to Collingwood area got 25-30cm due to this enhancement. My area didn't get quite as much as GB's influence was less. Regardless, 20cm was great considering the forecast.

Official measurement taking this morning in a trailer parked on the driveway which all the snow before this storm was removed and measured 25 cm officially - measurement taken 5 km north of downtown.
I've also noticed something interesting. Before the storm there was about 10-12 cm on the ground at the Trudeau Airport and after the storm - 40 cm. So basically it already lost 1/3 of the snow amounts from this storm in less than 12 hours. You would think the snow depth would be around 55 cm. Here when we had about the same amounts last week, the Airport observation snow on the ground went from 7 to 53 cm on the ground in one day, despite the heavy wet nature of the snow, whilist the light fluffy storm from yesterday's storm in Montreal.
