I use a Nikon D40... I LOVE it... I can take lightning and beautiful everyday pictures with the same machine! Whats great about it is no matter what future Nikon Camera or lens I buy, they can all connect with each other. So If I upgrade to a D80 , I can still use my 55-200mm lens from the D40.

I use a Nikon D3100 ($700 camera) with the standard 18-55mm lens for lightning photos, but sometimes my 0.20X Optika wide-angle lens works well too. Like some others already mentioned, use a good shutter speed up to around 30 seconds. Just make sure you set everything off of their AUTO modes, make sure they're set to M (manual), after using your camera to focus on your subject first. At night, use an ISO setting of either 800, 1600 or 3200 (the lower the better, higher ISO's tend to give off more image noise). I use the same technique to get stellar photos of the Milky Way and traffic time lapses. Also, set the white balance to either Cloudy or Incandescent, whichever works better for your situation.
