Rebooted my laptop this afternoon after I could not access the shared files from my desktop on my local network.

When it came up - all my desktop shortcuts had been removed from the desktop and placed into a 'Dell Dock' line at the top of the screen. I prefer to have the individual shortcuts on the screen and have no idea how to restore them.

A whole bunch of 'tool bars' that I had previously inactived on my IE8 browser were made active and were looking for configuration parameters.

A Google 'Desk bar' appeared on the Desktop and I can't find any way to inactivate it.

When I accessed my Outlook E-mail - I have to completely reactivate it - and so far it is not accepting pop3 'log on identities' that I am familiar with .

HELP!

If I were you mmi, I would save your necessary files to a different computer and then wipe your hard drive with a fresh install.

I had a similar experience before when I downloaded and installed an update. If you installed an update then that "may" be the cause , sometimes the update will make changes to your system , desktop , and browser. If you have your computer set to automatically download or install updates you may want to change that setting.

Some form of update was installed - not the Microsoft updates I am signed up for. Backing up to the restore point from the day before fixed the problem and it has been OK for the past week, including a couple of Microsoft updates.

I had the same thing occur two days ago - unable to access shared files from my other computer. Rebooted the Laptop and it displays wallpaper and applications that are not what I have been using and phrasing all the screens as if I am a new user.

Went to RESTORE and restored to two days previous and let her rip. It then came up the way it was supposed to. Ran Malwarebytes and two other defense systems on the box and they did not indicated any 'infestation'.

Has run satisfactorily for the past two days since the restore.

Ran until the middle of August - Doing a Microsoft Update it got caught in a update step 3 loop - while I was away from home. Computer shop blew it's brains out and reloaded the OS.

Still trying to get it back to the 'programatic condition' it was before - I hate when you get on line programs and they don't have a back-up CD.
