Quite cold this morning for coastal standards. Got down to 42F, However I'm sure it would have gotten much colder if it wasn't blowing a solid 30mph all night long. I'd imagine tonight to be the coldest with the winds abating. In terms of the last storm that moved through Monday Night / Tuesday...Was certainly not a washout, but it did drop an additional .21". The Milton Bradley PeeWee rain train was disappointing for many, but they did add up from a cumulative standpoint for other areas..For the year I stand just short of 3". More storms are forecast, Although on the lighter side, But I won't put too much trust into weather that is in the MR, Much less the LR.

Dewpoints just tanked up here in the past couple of hours to around 0F, and its still dropping. You can really tell in the air how dry its gotten.

Its going to be a COLD night tonight.

It was a cold one this morning and is still chilly out there now despite the sunshine. Looks like tonight may be even colder than last night in some areas. However, shortest day of the year is on Friday. Sunset has already become about 3.5 minutes later and will advance an additional minute by Friday.

Hills are turning green in the coastal areas as a result of the recent rains.

46F here in Santa Monica overnight into this morning with some gusty north winds - nothing extreme though. Tonight looks like it might be a bit cooler as there is much less wind.

Looking at the Sacramento area, it got very, very cold last night. Looks like some areas bottomed out around 25F! Looks like the main story in NorCal will be the rain. With 3+" of rain excepted there in the next 7 or so days December totals will be way above average.

The LA area isn't doing bad either - currently Santa Monica is at 81% of the average precipitation for the period of July - the end of this month. With more rain on the way, it looks like we'll also end up around or above normal.

Kind of off topic, But I was just reminiscing about the introduction to West Coast Threads on this board. We have a nice group of folks that continually contribute and keep things kicking around here, and It's appreciated. We may not be like the East Coast guys, (Which Amaze me by the way), In terms of their knowledge on Wx, But we collectively do pretty good and we're still constantly learning.

Anyhow, In terms of current weather, The Temps remain the big story as tonight looks to be extremely cold for most of us as the winds have finally abated, So we should get some good radiative cooling. We should get pretty close to freezing here with temps expected to be 35. Looking ahead, More rain looks likely by this weekend, and again after Christmas.

Beyond that it's not even smart to put any faith in what any models are depicting as things are probably going to change a month of sundays before even Thursdays event next week, much less what takes place beyond.

It is nice. It's been three years since I joined and our Western member base has grown quite a bit since then. Even in December 2009, I knew little about weather. I've learned a lot since then and it's great to have other members from the same region experiencing these events with me.

Early this morning I got down to 31F. Winds this afternoon were hectic across most inland sections of the region - cold and dry. Lot of leaves and such were blown about (dodged quite a few obstacles on the streets today).

On another note, news agencies in and around Southern California are frequently criticized by weather enthusiasts for being superficial, quick-to-the-point, inaccurate, vague and "showy" when it comes to their weather segments - all of which are correct - but I believe that most go much more into the details of weather now than they used to. Los Angeles news agencies, for instance, give pretty detailed forecasts with their weather news anchor actually going in-depth about whatever weather event is or isn't affecting the region. They frequently cite record highs and lows for the day, explain satellite imagery, are knowledgeable about microclimates, and give detailed readings such as barometric pressure, humidity, temperature, wind chill/heat index, precipitation, etc. for individual stations (most commonly Downtown L.A./USC). Much longer ago, they rarely ever gave out any of this information on the news, usually squeezing in some vague, bland weather report for the general area that lasted no longer than 10 seconds before moving on.

Take this San Diego news report from December 1977 for example (skip to 5:05). 1977-1978 was one of the wettest rain seasons in SoCal history, yet their forecast amounts to little more than "some rain, some sunshine, then more rain later". I also found a KABC news report from September 1978, when brush fires and heavy smog affected Los Angeles and the vicinity (near the end of the video). There was a strong Santa Ana Wind-induced heat wave at that time. Here's a report from October 1982 (5:57), and another from April 1987.

Yep my station read 31F around 7AM yesterday morning as well.

Question for you guys... is this windy/cold conditions that we're seeing right now technically part of a Santa Ana event?

I don't think its a true santa ana event, but more just a cold offshore flow.

The UHI effect was in full force this morning. I had 21F in Palmdale, 28F in Lancaster, and 18F just 2 miles north of Lancaster.

A 10F drop in 2 miles is a lot

Cold morning here but did not feel that cold with the dry air. Actually 55 and rainy feels a lot colder than 38 and bone dry. As long as we get about one storm a week, it should be enough to keep the hills green here.

Winter will officially arrive tonight at 3:12 AM, except for the Mayas of course, who will no longer have a date or time, so by the time we wake up tomorrow morning the Sun will have started its long trek north.

Only managed to match the 34F I got the previous night last night. It was down to 41F at 7pm, and then a light breeze started and within 10 minutes it was back up to 46F
