STATION NOTES.

December was a month when the monthly mean temperatures were just over the average. Rain fall was below average and sunshine was almost on the average.

Temperatures climbed into double figures on the 6th, 7th and 8th, then turned cold until the 17th the 11th and 12th saw an air frost and again an air frost was recorded on the 17th. A maximum of 0.8c was recorded on the 10th. Sunshine was on the average and ground frosts were recorded on 16 mornings.

The month was a dry one with a maximum rainfall total of 9.3mm recorded on the 29th.

A weather warning was out for heavy snow overnight on the 9th but the system moved south giving us only a light covering. Snow developed in the afternoon of the 10th this became moderate in the late afternoon and died out. During the month snow fell on 8 days.

STATION NOTES.

January was a month when the mean temperatures were just above average, rainfall and sunshine just below average. It was also a windy month with some snowfall.

The month started on a warm note with a maximum of 9.8c on the 2nd and 9.9c on the 4th. A cold period followed from the 5th to the 13th inclusive. 4 mild days followed then a further cold spell until 22nd. Milder air followed on the 27th through to the end of the month.

Januarys rainfall was just below the average with only 4 dry days within the month, the heaviest rainfall 10.5 mm on the 3rd Snow fell on 54 days 16th, 17th, 21th, 21st and the 31st The only day snow was laying on the ground was the 17th.

January was a windy month the average mean wind speed was 7.0 mph with a maximum gust of 55.0 mph on both the 3rd and 18th

Sunshine during the month of January was below average with 9 sunless day and a maximum of 5.75 hours recorded on the 7th

STATION NOTES.

February 2018 was a cold, dry month with average sunshine.

The first part of the month was cold with low day time temperatures on the 6th the maximum reached 0.3c during the day with a cold night following. Air Frosts were recorded on the first 15 days of the month with the exception of the 9th. The warmest part of the month was from the 14th to the 21st inclusive, this culminated with a maximum of 10.2c on the 19th. The coldest night was the 28th when the minimum fell to -6.3c. On the 26th, 27th and 28th the mercury never rose above freezing point. There was a ground frost on 22 days.

Rainfall was way below average 29mm which is 49% of the February average. The maximum recorded was on the 13th with 5.5mm recorded. A wind gust of 40.0 mph was recorded on the 20th. Sunshine was average a total of 62.77 hours with only 3 sunless days.

The significant cold and snowfall was saved to the last 4 days of the month with snow cover on the last 4 days of the month with the heaviest snowfall on the 28th a depth of 4.1 cm. These last 3 days were ice days when the temperature never rose above freezing with a cold Easterly Airflow having set in with wind gusts over 20.0 mph on all the days producing blowing snow.

STATION NOTES.

March was a very cold, wet and dull month with snow and low temperatures.

The month commenced with lying snow and the first two days were ice days. On the 1st a minimum of 6.4c was recorded and a maximum of -2.2c. Ground frosts were recorded on 9 out of the first 10 days of the month. The warmest day of the month was the 10th when a maximum of 12.6c was recorded. Two more Ice Days followed on the 17th and 18th

The month was wet with rainfall recorded on 25 days although the maximum total recorded on any one day was the 29th when 13.8mm was recorded. Sunshine was in short supply with 53% of the March average recorded with 6 Sunless Days and a maximum of 8.07 hours of sunlight on the 25th
