I have been keeping a song chart of personal favorites for nearly 42 years (since I was 13). I wanted to rank various songs I liked but were not big hits. Very few of these songs have a snowball's chance of making the Billboard Hot 100. This part 1, covering songs 100 to 76. A lot of these were carryovers from 2015 (and songs from late 2016/early 2017) because I did not listen to too many new songs during the first few months of 2016.

100 FLIPSIDE-NORAH JONES
a well-done retro-jazz-sounding tune with socially conscious lyrics
99 CAROLINA IN MY MIND (LIVE)-GREG NEFF
A local talent, this song charted because I heard him perform this James Taylor classic several times
98 DIAMONDS IN THE DUST-STEEP CANYON RANGERS
With superb banjo work, this was one of several songs from their 2015 Radio CD that charted in 2016.
97 TOO LATE-VAN MORRISON
With a classic Morrison sound, this sounded like his early-'70s FM rock heyday.
96 (FOLLOW YOUR HEART) (LIVE ON ETOWN)-KATIE HERZOG
a roots-rock sound—heard on the NPR live show one Saturday in June
95 GONE BEFORE YOU MET ME-ALAN JACKSON
A track from his 2015 Angels and Alcohol CD, this had an upbeat feel.
94 SING IT LOUDER-GARY BARLOW
A socially conscious folk tune that had good lyrics but musically was a bit too maudlin
93 BETTER MAN-LITTLE BIG TOWN C&W
A mature, sincere, winter-sounding country ballad that was, surprisingly, penned by plastic pop star Taylor Swift
92 EVERYTHING'S CHANGED-PATTY GRIFFIN
A mesmerizing folk strummer
91 BAD PEOPLE (LIVE ON ETOWN)-ANNA AND ELIZABETH
This roots-rock tune had a strong hook and was heard in a September show
90 CALIFORNIA-ROBERT ELLIS
A jazz-tinged ballad that had an early summer sound
89 HALLELUJAH-PENTATONIX AC
Their cover of the Leonard Cohen classic was released shortly before Cohen passed away.
88 LOVE IN THE DARK-ADELE
A melancholy ballad an an album cut from 25
87 NO-MEGHAN TRAINOR
A fairly catchy tune that was the first single from her sophomore album
86 I WON’T GO BACK-STEVE MARTIN/EDIE BRICKELL
An Americana song I first heard in late 2015
85 SEE YOU ON THE WAY DOWN-RENEE WAHL
A tune with a strong hook and an autumnal feel
84 ALL MY PEOPLE-KINDRED AND THE FAMILY SOUL
A soulful recording with a retro, 1970s sound
83 JOANNE-LADY GAGA
An acoustic ballad that nevertheless has a worldly-wise sound
82 THE THREE OF ME-WILLIAM BELL
A soulful tune that had a late-1960s R&B sound
81 WHEN GOD PAINTS-ALAN JACKSON C&W
A country ballad that would have been a big hit in his 1990s heyday
80 (WALK THROUGH WALLS) (LIVE ON ETOWN)-KATIE HERZOG
A tune with a soulful delivery and a melodic hook
79 RIDE THE TRAIN-THE Q-BACKS
A bouncy song with a 1950s rock vibe
78 WRECK YOU-LORI MCKENNA
A country-blues ballad with a Sunday night, autumnal sound—the lyrics were about codependency and a dysfunctional relationship.
77 WHEN YOU'RE GONE-AMANDA SHIRE
An Americana song with a strong hook
76 CAN’T WAIT ANY LONGER-JILL SCOTT
A soulful, old-school R&B sound
