Oh this sucks! Roof finally melted and I went to get my timelapse camera.
Word of advice.... Dont face the camera North during a Nor'Easter. Flurries start at 11am. Light snow at 12pm. Accumulations on grass and roof started at 12:30 Camera blocked at 1:30 Heavy snow started at 4pm and half foot accumulation by 11pm. November 2012 Timelapse October 2011 Timelapse Notice in October 2011 it accumulated faster as it came down harder at the start. Also notice it started at the same time (11am!) Strange. -------------------- Snow Totals Per Season:

Seeing an eye with a nor'easter is certainly not an unheard feature. A classic recent example is the Feb 11-12, 2006 blizzard: [attachment=175709:573px_Gr...rdof2006.jpg] Just WOW.....never knew this sort of thing existed "eye" |

HOLY MOLY! Thats incredible. I remember that storm. we got pounded in little ferry. My g/f(wife now) was like "its not going to snow much" I just laughed at her. It was the first time in a long time that a local railroad had to pull out the big gun snow plows to clear the line. If IŽ, not mistaken back then that storm dropped about 36 inches of snow around the area of White Plains, NY where I was. -------------------- |

so I drove from New Paltz to NYC today. Pretty much no snow until I got to the Putnam/Dutchess border. As expected, the highest amounts of snow were in Putnam and Westchester Counties. Still some snow in more rural parts of the city, but overall not very much.

Still some snow in more rural parts of the city, but overall not very much. I guess we both got our "snow stories" Saw nothing for most of the way, although there were a few spotty snow piles once I got towards the lower parts of the Hudson Valley. I didn't cross the Hudson so I didn't get to see how much Westchester had. Most interestingly, I noticed a remarkable increase in snow cover in NE NJ after crossing the NY/NJ border, what started out as spotty 1-2" piles turned into more frequent patches of snow on non-paved surfaces and some piles up to 6-12" or so. Apparently most of the snow was still there in the morning, but almost entirely melted during the day. Now we just have to wait for a while until we also get our share... I'm mostly interested in finding out how much snow the Palisades have (high elevations of NE NJ, up to 500ft). While I had 6" or so last October, I measured up to 10" in some spots there. -------------------- Visit my weather website for the NYC area

Well I kind of purposely took the taconic instead of the thurway because I figured there would be more snow along the route east of the hudson. I feel like the highest amounts where I passed through would be the higher elevations (1000 feet or so) in putnam county. However I didn't get off the highway at all so hard to know what the snow piles looked like. Either way I am sure it will be gone by the time I head back. Here in Queens there is still some spotty snow on grass, but its 90% all gone. I wouldn't be that shocked if toward the last week of November we see at least a light snow event in the interior, but doubt anything too interesting until at least December. We need a breakdown of the models for this storm like what was done for Sandy.

I dont have the resources or the memory to go through a model breakdown but ... Here's the recent reliable Euro from 7 days out with the placement of where the actual low was sitting November 8th.
And something I just came across, the Farmers Almanac which mentions snow in this time frame and even mentions the potential Thanksgiving storm. ![]() This post has been edited by NorEaster07: Nov 11 2012, 06:30 AM -------------------- Snow Totals Per Season:

A Map you would see for January...not early November. Nuts the more I think about it.
The less than 1 inch is accurate because a friend of mine in that area recieved a trace at most. Final snowfall totals from November 7-8, 2012. QUOTE An impressive autumn nor'easter dumped heavy snow across the state. A few areas picked up more than one foot of snow from the storm. Event summary: A light wintry mix of precipitation moved into southeastern Connecticut on the morning of November 7th. The precipitation quickly overspread the state from southeast to northwest. Most areas outside of lower New London County began as snow as stayed as snow through the duration of the event. Temperatures fell into the mid and lower 30's and by midday several locations had already reported an accumulation of snow. Bands of moderate to heavy snow set up across central and southwestern Connecticut during the afternoon. These bands were quite persistent and snow piled up. Conditions rapidly deteriorated during the evening commute as heavy snow was falling along sections of the Merritt Parkway, I-95, Route 8, I-91 and I-84. Some of the locations hardest hit included the Naugatuck Valley as well as New Haven and its northern suburbs. Snow tapered off to periods of light snow and snow showers after midnight, but some spots picked up an additional light accumulation of snow on the morning of November 8th. Final snowfall totals: A stripe of roughly 8 to 12 inches of snow was reported near and just southeast of the I-84 corridor. Totals decreased as you moved northwest and east of that area. Communities along the shoreline in New London County received little if any snow accumulation. An official report of 13.5 inches came in from Nicholas DiGiovanni in Clintonville. Totals in surrounding areas line up with this report, including 12.0 inches in Hamden, 12.0 inches in North Haven, and multiple reports of 12+ inches in Wallingford. A second bulls-eye centered over sections of the western Naugatuck Valley. Another report came in from the National Weather Service (NWS) of 13.5 inches in Monroe. Reported totals in adjacent towns came in with 13.0 inches in Oxford and 13.0 inches in Shelton. The map is compiled of reports from NWS offices in Albany, N.Y., Taunton, Mass. and Upton, N.Y., as well as totals sent in directly to WXedge.com and Storm Team 8 meteorologists. ***If you have a total that does not coordinate with this map, let us know.*** Keep in mind that several factors may lead to differing amounts. The fact that snow ended during the pre-dawn hours on November 8th meant that some melting and compaction likely occurred for those who measured the snow depth later that morning. Also, the banding nature of the snow led to highly variable snowfall amounts, even within individual towns. As a final note, the totals represented in the map are smoothed and approximate http://www.wxedge.com/articles/20131112fin...all_map_nov_7-8 -------------------- Snow Totals Per Season:

Since it shouldnt go un-noticed... Here's another view...
Most snow ever for the month of November in over 61 years Kennedy, NY Record Snowfall 3.7" November 22-23,1989 Newark, NJ Record Snowfall 5.7" November 22-23,1989 Bridgeport, CT Record Snowfall 6.6" November 22-23,1989 So forget the total amount for a second... look at the date... The most snow that ever fell in November came after Mid month towards the end. So thats how rare big snows are before mid November in those areas. This storm total November 7-8, 2012 Kennedy, NY 4.3" Newark, NJ 6.2" Bridgeport, CT 8.3" The storm didnt only beat the snowfall record but it beat the date by 2 weeks. -------------------- Snow Totals Per Season:
2007-08: 21" 2008-09: 41" 2009-10: 39.5" 2010-11: 71.5" 2011-12: 14" 2012-13: 46.5" Average(since 1950) = 27.75" |
