February 2011 was a mild month which finished winter on a mild note with the mean temperatures well above average. If a cold spell had not occurred between the 13th – 23rd inclusive it would have been a warmer month. Ground frosts were only recorded on 4 mornings The feature on the month was the amount of rain. I recorded rain on 20 of the days within the month with the 3rd, 4th and 5th making up the bulk of the rainfall. 46.3 mm recorded in the 3 days with the wettest the 3rd with 22.5 mm. Sleet fell on the 14th and on the 18th and 21st Snow fell along with a light snow shower on the 28th Sunshine was at a premium as I recorded 5 consecutive sunless days with only 43 hours on sunlight recorded. The 1st to the 7th saw the highest wind gusts with 36.5 mph recorded on the 4th |

March 2011 was a record breaker in terms of rainfall. I recorded just 7mm which is 9% of the average. The wettest day was the 30th when 2.7 mm was recorded this was preceded by 1.8mm on the 13th. The 5th, 6th, 10th 16th and 17th gave the remainder of the total. This was the driest March on record locally for 58 years. March was above normal temperature wise with a good warm spell from the 21st to the 25th and the plant growth was most notable, with the temperature peaking at 18.8c on the 23rd. The 26th was a cold day with a sudden plunge in temperature with a maximum of 8.4c recorded that day. The morning of the 8th under clear skies gave an air frost when -0.4c was recoded as a minimum throughout the month 11 ground frosts were recoded. The month was not like a lion but more like a lamb with a mean wind speed of 19 mph. Winds were dominant from a South Westerly quadrant and the end of the month saw a gust of 37.6 mph. There was a further windy day on 10th when a gust of 36.5 mph was recoded. |

April 2011 was a record breaking month in terms of warmth for this time of the year beating the previous records which were set in April 2007. The mean maximum was +5.6 c. The mean minimum was + 3.7c and the mean was +4.1c. There were cool nights the minimum on the 4th was 4.9c, the 12th 5.2c and the 28th gave a minimum of 4.4c. This was offset by warm days the period 21st to 23rd gave maximum temperatures of + 20c On the 1st a gust of37.6 mph was recorded. The wind direction was predominantly northerly on 14 of the days within the month. It was also a sunny month with sunshine 135% of the average The month was dry with 17 consecutive days with no rain during the period 6th to the 22nd. On the 3rd and 4th over the two days 9.3mm of rain fell. Then came the event of note on Saturday 23rd. There were warnings of thunderstorms given and the met office graphics were showing heavy rain for the part of Sheffield in which we live. During the day the temperature climbed to 23.5c. We were out visiting and at 14.30 we heard the first thunder accompanied by a flash of lightning. Welcome rain at long last for the bone dry garden. We then had small hail to start the storm; this was followed by heavy rain as we set off home down the hill into Hillsborough. We were met by flooded roads and as I drive an MG Salon which is low I turned back to find another way home. As we were standing in traffic we experienced large hailstones which sounded like machine gun fire on the car roof this left un-flooded ground covered with a blanket of hail. Finally after parking up the car and allowing the storm to abate we finally made it to higher ground and home. Manhole covers were tossed into the air and I observed a fountain of water from 1 drain about 1 metre high. I enclose an extra from the local paper with comments from the metro Group “I t6hink it’s a combination of a few things, such as how the ground is surrounding Sheffield. The moors south west of the city aid the lifting of the air a bit more. The hot and cold winds would have met in the Peak District, with the warm sunshine increasing the heat and moisture in the air. These ingredients came together over Sheffield – the lift from the hills, the sunshine and the cold air in the upper atmosphere made the conditions moister. They came together in sufficient quantities over Sheffield to create a thunderstorm which was slow moving owning to the light winds which were shifting from the South to the East. In a nutshell it was the humidity near the ground surface and the uplift from the moors and converging winds. It is stated that the large hailstones formed in freezing clouds about 2.5 kilometres above the ground and remained unusually large as they had only a short distance to travel from the sky. It is reported that 42mm rain fell in about 2 hours I live about 2 miles away from the centre and I recorded 10.8 mm it was so local that a station the other side of town recorded only 1mm |

May was another warm month and the temperatures exceed those of Aprils which were above average therefore taking into account the longer days the weather was exceptional Rainfall was more than some other parts of the country I recorded 76% of my local average there were 19 days in which rainfall was recorded with the 7th producing 15.3 mm followed by the 30th with 5.7 mm It was a windy month with the mean wind speed at 09z working out over the month a 5.0 mph the trees always appeared to be moving in the breeze. The warmest day was the 6th when the maximum recorded was 23.3 c and yet part of the day was cool and overcast so the forecasted storms were not triggered as the temperature did not climb to the expected heights. On the 4th there was a ground frost and I recorded a grass minimum of -0.4c the minimum air temperature that night was 2.8c. All the cold nights occurred in the first few days of the month. A maximum of 20c + was reached on the 5th to the 11th inclusive and again on the 17th. Thereafter during the months the temperatures dropped slightly |

June was not worthy on the title of “Flaming June” this year. The month started off with high temperatures and then they fell away. Contrast the 10th the maximum was only 14.4 and on the 12th the minimum was 6.0c this was the day we had 21.1 mm of rain. If it were not for the 2 hot days the 26th Maximum 29.5 and the 27th maximum 31.3c with a minimum temperature that night of 19c it would have been a cold month. We had a short lived storm at noon on the 8th with nothing spectacular. In the day we only had 6.7 mm of rain. In total rainfall worked out at 84% of the average. We had rain on 5 days running 20th to the 24th inclusive giving a total of 21.5 mm and on the 12th we had 21.1 mm of rain. It was never a windy month with winds dominant from the southerly quadrant. |

August was a month that will live in the memory for a very long time here in Burncross. I knew that there was an aurora alert issued for the evening of 6th August. Not expecting to see a thing as I retired to bed the lights went off and the curtains were opened and despite all the light pollution I could see in the North a green glow amongst the cloudy conditions, if I would have had a clear night the display would have been outstanding. August again continued the dry conditions with only 62% of the average rainfall recorded 41mm in total but for the 22mms which fell during the 24th and 26th it would have been a dry month. There was a slight storm in the evening of the 3rd with no appreciable rain recorded but 40 miles to the East if was a different picture. Temperature wise the period 1st – 3erd inclusive was warm with a maximum of 28.6 with heavy storms forecast yet we only got a slight storm with 2.2mm of rain. The 26th was a cold day with a maximum of 14.0c recorded although it was sunless all day which accounted for a low maximum. Overall the mean temperatures for August were just above the average. |

September was a warm and dry month. This is surprising as ex hurricane Katina did not produce very much rain, during the passage of the storm pressure fell to 993 mb with a maximum wind speed of 27.1 mph and rain 4 mm in total. There were no Thunderstorms within the month. Rainfall was recorded on 13 days within the month but amounts were small and only gave a total of 26.7 mm which is 42% of the average for the city. We booked a few days away on the Lincolnshire Coast and we basked in the Warm Weather. When we arrived on Monday 26th we were treated to a very bright sundog within the cirrus cloud. Then the hot weather arrived and when I am away I have my next door neighbour reads the instrumentation. On the 30th the maximum recorded was 27.2 c the warmest night was 22nd when the air temperature was 15.5c. In contrast the lowest maximum was 8.7c on the 15th with a grass minimum of 6.3 c and the highest minimum was 14.2c on the 29th |

March 2012 was a sunny dry and warm month with temperatures above the means; it was more like summer in the last week of the month than spring. The le3ngthening days produced some exceptional sunshine figures 26th gave 11.65 hours, the 27th gave 11.72 hours, the 28th gave 11.60 hours, the 29th 10.30 hours and the 30th 10.53 hours. These figures gave a boost to the month with a total of 169.98 hours of sunshine recorded which is 157% of the average. It got warm from the 25th onwards culminating in a maximum of 20.9c on the 28th until the 30th the quite nights gave fog each morning from the 22nd to the 25th inclusive this prevented ground frosts as I only recorded 5 within the month. The mean temperatures were well above normal with the coldest night on the 6th when the minimum air temperature was 1.0c with a grass minimum -2.1c. The lack of rainfall again was the concern as rainfall was recorded on only 7 days within the month a total of 31mm was recorded which is 51% of the local average. 16.2 mm of rainfall fell on the 17th. |

Most of this month was on the warm side with a high maximum of 26.1 c on the 14th and a high minimum of 13.4 c on the 30th although there never was a hot spell throughout the month. There was a very cold night in the month the 30th under clearing skies temperatures plummeted with a screen minimum of 7.0 c and a grass minimum of 3.5 c which is a record for an August night. The same trend was applicable throughout the County of Yorkshire. Rainfall was a fairly dry month up to the 15th when 15.7 mm was recorded on the 25th which had two storms within the day one at noon and one later in the afternoon when 29.2 mm was recorded this was not at all surprising as a drove home through a rushing torrent of water 60 mm deep in places. These falls made up a 110 mm which is 163% of the average Sunshine again was below average with 112.09 hours recorded which is 88% of the average on the 9th 11.96 hours of sunshine was recorded with only one sunless day within the month |
