So do we all get to talk like cavemen and run around with mammoths? I've been hoping for the day when I get to skip shaving and run around in a loincloth like a fool.

Katla potential eruption has been brewing for several months. Seeing that an eruption is overdue this volcano could very well go off sometime in the coming months. Since this could be a major eruption and affect the weather over the coming year or two I am including this in both this winter and next.

Certainly it would have an impact on the following winter. -------------------- "Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder; to cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man; to satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth? Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew? Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it? The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen."

If it erupts are they talking major global weather changes? Like an ice age? It could have major weather impacts if it erupts and could very likely cool the northern hemisphere for a few years after it erupted. See what Mt. Pinatubo did to the weather after it erupted in 1991. There is much more to causing an "ice age" than a single large volcano eruption but a Katla eruption as I mentioned could bring quite a bit of cooling to the world especially northern hemisphere. |

With regard to what for the Northen hemisphere, cooler or milder? From what I've been reading it would cool the Northern Hemisphere. It would also create more blocking! This is going to be a big game changer if this happens. We would have cooler summers and cooler solar dimming. Colder winters. I have been reading this info off the weatherbell site. It was in October they had a story on this! -------------------- Dave • Jericho, VT Eastern Chittenden County WINTER SEASON 2012/2013 So Far: 66.5" WINTER SEASON 2011/2012: 50" WINTER SEASON 2010/2011: 252" Epic snowstorms! |

With regard to what for the Northen hemisphere, cooler or milder? Colder. See "Global environmental effects" section regarding the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo (Philippines) in 1991. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Pinatubo Also see what a huge volcano eruption can do to the world climate. One of the most famous and largest in the last millenium was Mt. Tambora. It caused the famous 1816 "year without a summer". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tambora_volca...5#1815_eruption http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer I am not saying Katla would even come close to Tambora but it could still be a very large eruption if and when it goes off. |

Well, since this is up already...here's a tidbit from the latest MEI update
QUOTE it is worth noting that of the ten two-year La Niña events between 1900 and 2009, four ended up as a three-year event, so I would put the odds for this to occur in 2012-13 at 40% right now. Interestingly, the other six all switched to El Niño, leaving no ENSO-neutral case. Will be interesting to see how 2012 evolves. Regardless of what happens the balance of this winter, I am becoming very excited about next winter. According to JB on weatherbell, he says it will be the winter of "lawyers guns and money coming at you". Although he hasn't gone into great detail about it as yet, he hinted that it will likely involve a weak el nino enso. Also, FWIW, he expects a cooler summer 2012 across a large chunk of the lower 48. Hang in there people, the future looks brighter, even if it means waiting 10 more months for it. He's referred to 2012-2013 for over a year now about being the blockbuster winter us easterners have been dreaming of. We shall soon find out!

Well, since this is up already...here's a tidbit from the latest MEI update Source Hmm, this Nina currently reminds me off the late 60's/mid 70's ENSO event and late 90's ENSO event. As an example this is what I mean; more recent in brackets. 69/70 (06-07): El Nino 70-72 (07-09): La Nina 72-73 (09-10): Strong El Nino 73-74 (10-11): Strong Nina 74-75 (11-12): Nina 75-76 (12-13): Strong Nina? Given the deeply negative PDO anomaly and La Nina enriched atmosphere lets see what happens This post has been edited by Snowstorms: Dec 26 2011, 10:01 PM |
