Here's an animation of the global weather patterns in Aug 2005 that led to Hurricane Katrina. Created by NASA on a supercomputer with the GEOS-5 global atmospheric model.

Absolutely brilliant from NASA and thanks a lot for sharing such a valuable resource. The worldwide global patterns that led to the formation of this hurricane are explained here superbly. What is really interesting is that it all started at the North Pole and progressively moved towards the Atlantic wherein the tropical storms culminated into the creation of Katrina. Very enlightening!
