The link is to a story about one woman difficulties in obtaining healthcare in the USA these days.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/01/health/elder....html?hpt=hp_c3

I have known this couple for almost 20 years. They are educated, hard working, responsible, independent thinking people who desired to make their own way through the world, paying as they went and upholding all the obligations they made.

The healthcare system that is in place today, is a maze, a maze of sufficient size and complexity that no one fully understands what can be done and what resources are available for payments and treatments for those who need it. You ask 100 people what to do about your situation and you get 200 or more answers - and when you follow those answers maybe 10 of them are real.

I am fortunate, I have employer provided health insurance and most situations can be handled with at call to the plan's administrators and asking the qestions about the line of treatment the doctors are recommending. When you are without insurance, you are without that kind of resource from a informational viewpoint, let alone someone that will foot the bills.

I understand the most on this forum are much younger than myself, and as such have had very little interaction with the healthcare system as it exists today and as it will exist in the future (nobody truly knows about the future). Don't think, 'It will never happen to me, I am immortal and will have good health forever'. While you may think that in your 20's - when you start reaching your 50's & 60's things start happening and you need health care.

mmi, I think that the audience here doesn't have enough experience with the health care system to comment. I've only had minor- moderate interactions and have been stuck in that maze. It is UGLY in there.
