The moth was very mild commencing with double figure maximum until the 8th when a period of single figure maximums was recorded apart from 1 day which was 12th. The 13th was the notable day with a maximum of 6.6c a minimum of 0.1c and a grass temperature of -2.9c the only ground frost within the month. From the 15th onwards it was double figure maximums until the end of the month with the 18th and 19th yielding maximums of 15.2.

The maximum mean air temperature was a new record 11.4c beating 11.0c set in 2000. The monthly mean air temperature of 8.9c was not a record it was beaten by 1994 with a mean of 9.3c.

The month was very dull with a total of 27.3 hours of sunlight recorded just 50% of the average the most sun was on the 29th when a paltry 4.37 hours we4re recorded with 15sunless days within the month.

Rainfall 97.8 mm was 113% of the average. The 12th produced a rainfall total of 16.8mm and heavy rain of the 30th produced 13.8 mm. Within the month only 3 days were recorded without rain. We enjoyed Christmas day in Halifax when over 25mm of rain fell and yet when we arrived home only 9.9mm was recorded and on our journey home to Sheffield we ran out of the rain. Yet the Calder Valley suffered from floods.

During the month wind was a feature the average at 09z was 8.4 mph and during the month 14 days were from a Southerly Direction and 11 from a South Westerly direction. The passage of Storm Desmond on the 4th gave a maximum wind speed of 57.6 mph within the month gales were recorded on 11 days.

In March of this year I was in Iceland looking at the aurora and I always look out locally in a dark area when the conditions are right. On the 20th about 20.45 I observed a slight glow and again on the 31st a slight glow was noticed at 23.05 hours before the fireworks started to welcome the New Year

STATION NOTES.

The start of March 2016 was certainly cold and this was reflected by the monthly mean temperatures. The first day of the month was certainly mild with a maximum of 11.7c. The following day the snow showers commenced and lasted of and on throughout the 2nd and 3rd. The Met Office put out a warning for snow on the morning of the 4th and we in North Sheffield caught the back edge of the snow which had fallowing of part of Lancashire and West Yorkshire I measured a covering of 5 cm at my location and on the higher ground the snow was heavy accompanied by winds speeds of roughly 25 mph. It is little wonder that the A57 Snake Pass was blocked followed by the A629 Woodhead Pass and difficult driving conditions prevailed over the tops of the M62 into Greater Manchester. The covering of snow I had melted during the day and 5th and 6th further snow showers followed.

Temperature wise on the 4th the maximum was 2.7c and the minimum was 1.1c. The clear night of the 7th through to the morning of the 8th produced a grass minimum of -8.6c. with an air frost of -1.9c. Sunshine was below average with 84.c hours recorded this is 84% of the average on the 7th under the clear conditions 9.91 hours of sunlight was recorded.

The month started with rain and melted snow up to from the 10th to the 25th inclusive when it was dry throughout the period, the 9th giving 72.8mm of precipitation. Then followed a dry spell. This was broken by 5.1mm on the 25th and 28.5 mm on the 27th 28.5mm. The highest wind gust was 45.0 mph during the snow showers on the 2nd.
