The start of March 2016 was certainly cold and this was reflected by the monthly mean temperatures. The first day of the month was certainly mild with a maximum of 11.7c. The following day the snow showers commenced and lasted of and on throughout the 2nd and 3rd. The Met Office put out a warning for snow on the morning of the 4th and we in North Sheffield caught the back edge of the snow which had fallowing of part of Lancashire and West Yorkshire I measured a covering of 5 cm at my location and on the higher ground the snow was heavy accompanied by winds speeds of roughly 25 mph. It is little wonder that the A57 Snake Pass was blocked followed by the A629 Woodhead Pass and difficult driving conditions prevailed over the tops of the M62 into Greater Manchester. The covering of snow I had melted during the day and 5th and 6th further snow showers followed. Temperature wise on the 4th the maximum was 2.7c and the minimum was 1.1c. The clear night of the 7th through to the morning of the 8th produced a grass minimum of -8.6c. with an air frost of -1.9c. Sunshine was below average with 84.c hours recorded this is 84% of the average on the 7th under the clear conditions 9.91 hours of sunlight was recorded. The month started with rain and melted snow up to from the 10th to the 25th inclusive when it was dry throughout the period, the 9th giving 72.8mm of precipitation. Then followed a dry spell. This was broken by 5.1mm on the 25th and 28.5 mm on the 27th 28.5mm. The highest wind gust was 45.0 mph during the snow showers on the 2nd. |
