QUOTE(PoconoSnow @ Jul 21 2018, 10:13 AM) *
Wonder what would happen if I went there and posted east Asia rule, typhoon rule, Bering sea rule and rrwt stuff and didn't simply digest model data and spew it out

My gut says it wouldn't be received well. I registered there and saw a few posts that made me cringe... I never looked back

And by cringe I mean an admin literally poking fun at organics

I like my weather discussion to not be purely in the box. The best part about this site was how it treats amateur minds and how it allows them to mold their interpretation of weather and forecasting.... not being almost forced to adhere to the hive mind

By no means am I ripping your friend or whatever, I just saw discussion that did not sit well with me.

Also don't they tag "mets" like American? I don't like that either. Everyone posting should be treated equally which promotes posting from lurkers or amateurs rather than driving it away.

Words cannot express my thoughts since I was banned for sticking up for my research against the tactics used. It reminds me of Twitter when people tweet about being humble and kind then turn around and attack those who don't agree.

The other admins even threatened me with legal action after I tweeted about the unfair treatment. I told them to go ahead and take me to court because my multiple emails to them about how I was treated by their founder, John Homenuk, would show how they favored him and did nothing about it.

Funny thing about them not tagging Mets like American is they tweeted how they were getting upset about people who didn't have qualifications acting like they were meteorlogist on the forum.

I am going to move forward with designing a forum so as to make it a viable option.. Hopefully functional by the end of the week. That being said, I still would like a significant amount of input from everyone as I said... I would like it to be laid back, informative and to hold onto to a similar vibe we have here.
On a side note : JD... Are you talking about the EU laws concerning privacy and mandates for expiration times on posts?

Yes...whenever y'all login to the Accuweather forum site you should notice a new segment on top that you have to acknowledge.

I would be interested in knowing what y'all come up with. I can guarantee that Accuweather executives won't provide an archive of the forums due to the EU laws that are partly responsible for closing the forum.

I see a registration for jdrenken on WXForum.net that is pending the email validation. I sent another validation request. The email registered was for jdrenken7 at gmail so that is where the validation message should have gone.

Member display names do not appear in the member list until the registration/validation process is completed. Only admins can see the member list for pending members.

I never received the original email to begin with. Then I received this one. I have registered.

Yep...still haven't received the confirmation email as I've looked in each different folder I have.

I wish everyone luck, but considering the issues that it has with just registration...it won't handle the load come winter.

He also posted this yesterday, probably in response to the posts in this thread

I did use a gmail account. When I attempted to re-register, now I get a message that someone already has the name jdrenken. Not only that, but to accuse people of "folks with diminished visual acuity" when, in reality, it's the captcha that can't figure out what horizontal vs vertical means is a little bit insulting.

But hey...what do I know.

I was a member of WeatherMatrix, but had no special relationship with Jesse either there or here. I liked the old weatherforum.net for the weather software/hardware and website programming stuff. When weatherforum.net died suddenly, four of us worked to resurrect it as wxforum.net in 2006, and two of the original founders are still active on the site.

It's true that wxforum.net tends more to weather software/hardware and website programming stuff, but never to the exclusion of other topics interesting to weather enthusiasts, so the Accuweather forum folks are and should feel quite welcome there.

WXforum.net was founded as an independent (not sponsored by a weather software enterprise) and so is a bit different than specialty forums for Weather-Display, Cumulus, WeatherCat and Meteobridge. We do have members who are primary authors of some of that software, but main support for their producs really exists on their dedicated forums.

Yes, we've had some heated discussions regarding climate change, and some members had to be counseled about bad behavior, but in general, the forum has a lot of knowledgeable, helpful and mostly polite members, and we like it that way smile.gif

Best regards,
Ken (admin WXForum.net)

Nope...it was on a computer. My point is this...

QUOTE
hor·i·zon·tal:

So, it stated to place the pictures vertically. I tried multiple times. Then, I looked to the left and it showed a horizontal picture and, go figure, it worked when I placed the pictures horizontal.

Let's move away from what this has become and focus on what this thread should be. Emotions run high as people have shown devotion for over a decade to this and consider the members as family. Difference of opinion is one thing, how we approach it is another.

Hi forum members,

I have been around since Jessie's WeatherMatrix days, and have spent countless hours lurking, learning laughing and crying here about weather.

The news of the pending shutdown of this valuable asset makes little to no sense. The expenditure by a corporation as large as this is comparable to a molecule in a bucket of water. Pennywise, pound foolish.
I have sent the below e-mail to customerservice@accuweather.com, a address found on their privacy statement. I encourage all members to follow suit and contact Accuweather directly and convey how bad this decision is and will be.

Let's put up a fight for our forum.

Yours in weather,

Chaznolan1117
E-mail copy below:
-----------------------------
I am a founding member of the Accuweather forum, and came here from Jessie Ferrell's WeatherMatrix forum, with a join date of November 2005.

I am not an active poster, a stance that is common here. I lurk. I learn. I post when I have something intelligent and pertinent to contribute. This forum is the northeast's goto location for winter storm discussion.

This forum is VITAL for the amature weather community. We use this forum for education, forecast discussion and local current condition reporting. Currently, there is no other forum with a backing from a major forecasting company. I believe that shutting down this platform is a huge mistake, and will cause me, and many others to find another outlet to get commercial forecasts from.

Please reconsider this harsh decision, the minimal amount of money that would be spent by a corporation as large as Accuweather to upgrade and maintain hosting hardware and software is trivial. The loss of an ICONIC, game changing platform that was started along time a go by a barely known weather buff will be devastating to the amature community.

Yours in weather,

Charles Nolan.

Great idea...not sure if it will make a difference, but it brings up some good points!

The bet = that I would not get any more than 30" SN from Jan 2016 storm (original bet was that I would get no more than 12", but that bet did not involve a Speedo)

Renken was adamant that a HUGE SN storm was going to bury the East - and he did so based on the strong support of the Bering Sea Rule.
So, I said that there NAM (I believe) was showing 3'+ for my region (at one point, as much as 44") - Renken said it was possible.

Thinking to myself "no way - that would be all time historic for IMBY", I said.... (paraphrased) "If I get more than 30" from this one storm, I'll go out into it, wearing only a Speedo, and pay homage to a the Bering Sea Rule.

I ended up with 33-36" IMBY and had to pay the bet. JD (Renken) approved the final design for the "shrine" before I posted.

I went back into the DKB thread and found it.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I have been privy to this for quite some time now and took an oath of silence until something was "official". It has been a long 10 years, 3 months, & 21 days since I joined this amazing forum. The glory days of our monster severe weather outbreak threads with old school weatherbug storm velocity screenshots and GOES-East water vapor loops of tropical disturbances are gone.

During those 10 years I have watched people come and go. A great number of those have reached out to me via social media outlets telling me how they are now meteorologist in the field and appreciated what the forums did for them regarding education and helping them become better forecasters. There are also others who, on their way out, kicked and screamed like children about how they were wronged. Some of those even threatened myself and my family.

In those 10 years, 3 months, and 21 days, my approach to how I interpret, and moderate, our guidelines never changed. An unbiased approach across the board. There were many times that I would post something in the threads and both wishcasters and bittercasters would claim I supported the other just based on that very post. During large scale events my inbox would be inundated by reports. Even when all of the moderators were on staff we couldn't keep up with the large amount of complaints.

I stress how this "job" was volunteer. Not once were the moderating staff paid for our time here.

Fair winds and following seas shipmates!
