The picture posted showed a 6ft tall road sign buried on the side of hwy 89 near Alliston. Every single person I've spoken to talked about roads being closed for days, schools closed for days, drifts up to the roof, delivering goods on snowmobiles, etc. The consensus is unanimous regardless who I speak to about it. Is it possible this area received more? The claims just seem pretty outrageous, I've never seen a storm dump over 50cm in my life and there's no record of one outside of LES in southern Ontario. But the stories and this picture show an insane amount of snow.

I'd love to get a pictorial or synopsis of the storm is there anywhere to get a graphic of it ?

Sounds intense! Can't even imagine that much snow falling in April of all months ohmy.gif

The prairies look to enjoy another round in the freezer for early March.

It might be that the system generated some lake-effect behind it which added to the totals but I'm not sure offhand. It was a 980mb 25cm paste bomb in Chicago and dropped 26cm at YOW and YUL. YYZ had 7cm on the 2nd and 17.5 on the 3rd FWIW.

EDIT: Unsurprisingly the airmass was quite marginal but sometimes all it takes is cold enough.

Oh, I'm familiar with big April snowfalls, just nothing like that has ever happened here during April in my lifetime that I can recall.

I think Buttonville got something like 22cm from a system in April 2009 but actual accumulation was much lower due to temps and ground warmth. Last year we got 15cm from a system as well but 50-60cm would be unheard of anywhere around this region during April.

That 60cm thing seems pretty suspect to me, at least based on synoptic snow alone with the reports such as they are. Could have been additional amounts due to other factors and in locales to the NW.

Either way a noteworthy storm - especially for the time of year.

Really appreciate the info Mike. I'll try to look into more myself and see what I can find. LES behind the system could have added to the totals up in this area, the 60-90cm numbers being thrown around from residents were all from the Alliston Simcoe County area, not GTA. But I heard they got about a foot.

FOUND IT: Alliston actually has partial weather records dating back to 1972. So I found April 1975 and the station on Nelson St, Alliston (downtown) only reported precipitation from 1972 to 1977, then went into full temperature/precip afterwards.

So on April 2nd there was 27.9cm followed by 7.6cm on the 3rd, and finally 5.1cm on the 4th for a total of 40.6cm! A little less then the "memory" of the old timers, but still a pretty epic storm for April. It remains our snowiest April ever (at least since 1972).

All this talk of April. Have you guys given up on March already? I am dropping in to Ontario overnight on my way to Vancouver then NZ...EC forecasting 12 tomorrow for Barrie...pretty crazy. Repeated runs of the GFS offer the same old MO for 2016/17...wet storms followed by LES...one of these storms must eventually deliver something decent though.

All of the March talk here has been centered around 2017 but for reasons only Facebook can know April 1975 is a hot topic. Nothing much has been said about April 2017 that I recall.
