The crater floor of Pu'u'O'o collapsed yesterday as lava withdrew from that area. I just missed this event as I had looked at the webcam less than an hour before!
Hopefully this will shift the eruption away from threatening more Kalapana homes... A great write-up here...

Also, just found a video of the Pu'u'O'o collapse on Youtube...check it out!

UPDATE 3-21 Eruption is now paused. Long pauses are often followed by major changes in the eruption.

Just a quick update, still nothing major going on in Hawaii. Pu'U'O'o crater is slowly filling up again, and has a neat perched lava lake.

Keep in eye on the Pu'U'O'o webcam...I think something interesting is going to happen there soon, the crater floor and lava lake are bulging upwards.

The lava lake is still uplifting, and lava has started to flow over the western rim of the crater.
They have some new webcams:

The crater floor collapsed again! And I missed seeing it by a few hours again!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFgmLwf-3ug

It collapsed because of a new fissure on the flank of Pu'U'O'o....

The crater has filled up already and has been overflowing. There is some danger to Kalpana Gardens again if the eastern flow continues

The eruption has been pretty stable over the last year but now the lava is moving (slowly) in an interesting direction.

The Pu`u `O`o eruption continued without much change. Spatter cones on the floor of Pu`u `O`o crater displayed persistent bright glow; the southwest spatter cone erupted another short lava flow around 6 am yesterday morning (third in a two-day period) and the southwest spatter erupted a longer flow between 10 am and noon yesterday. The northeast spatter cone continued to feed the Kahauale`a 2 lava flow, which extends 6.3 km (3.9 mi) northeast of Pu`u `O`o (per 12/26 mapping); the new beakout from the upper Kahauale`a 2 lava tube appeared stalled but inclement weather has prevented many webcam views of this area. When weather permits, distant views of the flow front from the PNcam and R3cam (working intermittently) showed small breakouts and burning forest in several spots.

Just a heads up, the lava flow is starting to get much closer to some populated areas. They are updating the map every 2 days or so now..

From USGS

QUOTE
Starting on the afternoon of Monday, April 30, 2018, magma beneath Puu Ōō drained and triggered the collapse of the crater floor. Within hours, earthquakes began migrating east of Puu Ōō, signaling an intrusion of magma along the middle and lower East Rift Zone. As of about noon on Wednesday, May 2, these earthquakes continue along the lower East Rift Zone, with many reports of earthquakes felt by residents in nearby subdivisions. The orange dashed line marks the approximate area within which most of the earthquakes are located based on automatic earthquake locations and analysis by seismologists. All earthquake locations are preliminary. For more details on the hazards associated with this ongoing event, see this link: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html (see large map)

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
U.S. Geological Survey
Friday, May 4, 2018, 7:45 AM HST (Friday, May 4, 2018, 17:45 UTC)

KILAUEA VOLCANO (VNUM #332010)
1925'16" N 15517'13" W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WARNING
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Summary:
An eruption is in progress along Kīlauea Volcano's lower East Rift Zone. Since late afternoon May 3, at least three small fissure vents have opened in Leilani Estates subdivision in the lower Puna district. At this time, activity consists mostly of vigorous lava spattering. Additional outbreaks in the area are likely. Deflationary tilt at the summit of the volcano continues and the lava lake level continues to drop.

Photos and maps of activity will be posted to the HVO web site as they become available. https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_chronology.html

Lower East Rift Zone:
The first outbreak of lava occurred late in the afternoon of May 3 following days of increased earthquake activity and ground deformation. As of this morning, three separate fissures have opened in the eastern portion of Leilani Estates. Each outbreak has been preceded by ground cracking and strong gas emission. Activity consists primarily of vigorous spattering of lava and development of very short lava flows that have yet to travel more than a few tens of yards from the vent. Earthquake activity in the area remains elevated and ground deformation is continuing. High levels of volcanic gas are reported around the fissure vents.

Residents of the Puna District to remain alert, review individual, family, and business emergency plans, and watch for further information about the status of the volcano. Hawaii County Civil Defense messages regarding conditions, warning, and evacuations may be found at http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/active-alerts/.

Summit Observations:
Deflationary tilt at the summit continues. In concert, the summit lava lake is dropping. Tremor amplitude is fluctuating with lava lake spattering. Elevated summit sulfur dioxide emission rates persist. Gas emissions remain elevated. Current webcam views are here: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_webcams.html

Puʻu ʻŌʻō Observations:
Seismicity remains elevated at Puʻu ʻŌʻō but tiltmeters near the cone show no significant deformation overnight. During fieldwork at Puʻu ʻŌʻō yesterday, no lava activity was observed in the area. The 61g lava flow is no longer being fed. The summit crater of the cone continues to collapse intermittently producing small plumes of ash; yesterday there were several episodes of ash emission in response to collapse, including immediately after the nearby M5.0 earthquake.

The islands have been 'constructed' by volcanoes over the millennia, why should we expect the volcanism to stop because humans now inhabit the islands.
