Another quake today in NJ ..2.2 on Richter scale
My first quake.... It felt like an explosion happened nearby, or a crash or a tree fell, the house shook slightly and there was a loud ruimbling. I can't imagine a large quake..it would seem as if the earth was coming apart. |

Wow! Looks like you were only 4 miles from the epicenter. After doing some mapping, (by google) it turns out I was approx. 2.5 miles from the epicenter. However, some houses were only feet away! (laterally, then there is the depth). Researches say that these small quakes "come in clusters" and therefore there may be more. They release stress on this local fault, which is a compression fault. Cool stuff, as long as no one gets hurt and nothing breaks! |

There are a surprising number of small faults along the Eastern US...the quakes that occur do not have a high Richter number, however, they scare the bejesus out of those that think quakes only occur in California.

I recently moved to Florida from Upstate NY and a few years back we had an earth quake up there. Very rare for me to experience. I was about 15 miles from the epicenter. It was the first and only quake I have been through... and yes mmi16, it scared the bejesus out of me.. It was early morning around 4am and I had fallen asleep on the couch only to be awoken to the house rumbling. I didn't know what to think. My first thoughts were along the lines of an explosion. It didn't last that long and until I could realize what was happening it was over.

The US Geodetic Survey site has at good section on Earthquakes....in the US and around the world on a near real time basis. Very interesting. I'd post the link, but I am at work and can't access it through the firewall. -------------------- Never too old to have a happy childhood! .......... ..........![]() Don't put an age limit on your dreams! |
