As I record sunlight on a electronic recorder supplied by R & D Instromet in Eastborne UK a sunless day is a day when no sunshine is recorded whatsoever. That of course would be overcast conditions throughout the daylight hours. Brian |

September 2004 was another record-breaking month with a new record mean minimum temperature of 11.6c breaking the old record of 11.5c that was recorded in 1958. The mean maximum was +1.2c the mean minimum was +1.9c and the mean was +1.6c. The highest mean for the record was 15.9c in the warm September of 1999. The rainfall was just over average with 73mm falling in the month. Within the month we had only 2 sunless days The month started off with a dry spell with no rain falling until the 11th this was quite amazing as I was away in Kenya and up in the mountains at Bunyore nearly each afternoon from 16.00hours to 18.00hours you could guarantee a storm with rain lashing on the tin roofs. |

A Rainbow observed on 2 occasions on the 21st. January 2005 was a notable month for the mildness, the wind and the lack of rain. The month was the one the warmest since 1990 with an average of 6.11c while the rainfall was 61 mm. The main talking point was the wind and the lack of notable snow. The mean maximum temperature was 8.56c, which was the warmest for 15 years with 1990 showing a reading of 9.8c. The mean minimum was the highest since 1983 these two combined gave a mean of + 2.41c. Temperatures started mild and overall there wasn’t any notable real cold weather to speak of. The lowest maximum temperatures of the month were on the 22nd to the 25th. The only time temperatures peaked below five degrees. Only two air frosts were recorded on the 22nd and 23rd, which is amazing considering the time of year. The highest temperature was 13.5C recorded on the 15th while the lowest was –0.7 on the 22nd. Towards the end of the month temperatures dropped back but still were high enough to make it one the mildest Januarys on record. Ground frosts were only recorded on 4 occasions with the 22nd and 23rd giving low ground temperatures. January 2005 was a dry month 61 mm, which is 74% of the average, with 9 mm, recorded on the 9th including sleet showers. Snow fell on only 2 occasions during the month on the 18th and 24th giving only a dusting. The wind reached speeds over 30 mph on six times during the month considering my station is situated in a lee of the hills this is high a maximum of 42.3 mph was recorded on the 19th. |

It is interesting to note that the mean maximum added to the values of the 8 Marches shows a trend of warmer mean maximums. 1997 12.7 1998 11.5 1999 11.0 2000 12.8 2001 13.3 2002 11.7 2003 12.7 2004 10.0 2005 10.3 The means in the period from 2000 onwards were all also warmer 2000 8.9 2001 9.2 2002 8.2 2003 8.2 2004 6.8 2005 7.7 Rainfall was another factor as the month gave only 36mm, which is 57% of the average with a maximum fall of 7mm on the 26th. The were only 51.22 hours of sunshine recorded during the month with no sun from the 26th onwards during a further cold period to end the month. The winter rainfall works out as follows: Month Total in mms Average % October 2004 205 280% November 2004 96 123% December 2004 61 77% January 2005 61 74% February 2005 60 108% March 2005 36 57% This is remarkably over the average as it was a wet October |

September 2005 was a month of above average temperatures and above average rainfall. One or two cool nights helped cool the temperatures down slightly without those it would have well over normal. The month started hot before cooling down as the month went on. Rainfall started on the low side but a weak overnight storm heralded the start of a wet month. Temperatures continued the hot weather from the end of the previous month peaking at 26.7c on the 6th. The mean maximum temperature was +2.5c of the local averages, again the minimum was +3.2 and then the mean temperature was +2.3 above the average. Therefore there was a new local record set for the mean minimum 12.0c was just 0.3c over the 1999 average. Rainfall for once came in well above average. It started dry then a weak storm produced 35 mm of rain over two days during the 8th and 9th. Further heavy rain fell on the 15th and 28th, 16 mm and 11 mm respectively |
