STATION NOTES.

June 2007 was a record breaking month for the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Region it will be remembered for the wettest month on record locally and yet despite all the rain it was a warm month. In keeping with the last month we have entered July with the Atlantic Systems lying further South across the country than what they usually do.

The month was dominated by winds from a Northerly quadrant a total of 12 days with a further 5 days with an Easterly flow. The highest wind was recorded on the 25th with a gust of 30 mph and all day speeds of 15 mph plus was recorded.

Despite the winds from the cold quadrants. The period 8th to the 13th saw maximum temperatures of 20c+ with a maximum of 25.3c on the 11th. Overall the temperatures were above the normal and this despite the short supply of sunshine as on 91.29 hours were recorded during the month. The lowest night temperature was during the night of the 2nd when the ground temperature fell to 3c.

During the month we had 4 storms, the first was singled the start of the major rain fall I heard a single clap of thunder at 15.30 hours on the 13th then the rain commenced over the 13th to 17th I recorded 122mm of rain this was the catalyst for the major flooding during this period we had a further storm on the 15th from 19.00 hours to 21.00 hours with quite vivid lightening. This was the first major flooding as our area borne the brunt of the rain 88mm was recorded. On the morning of the 15th we woke up in Chapeltown to torrents of water and the centre of the village was cut of with floods up to 5 feet deep. The two local roads across the road by my home were closed as water poured out of the woods at Grenoside. This torrential rain flooded the ground and major run off occurred as the ground could not absorb any further water.
The evening of the 19th saw a further heavy storm from 21.30 hours to 22.30 hours and it was a light storm. The heaviness on the atmosphere could be felt and during the night i.e. the early hours of the 20th we had a strong heavy storm which started with a cloud to ground discharge then there was a spectacular display of cloud to ground lightening. These two storms gave a total of 24mm of rain added to the 14mm which was recorded on the 17th.

To this saturated ground on the 0n the 24th and 25th most of the rain commencing after midnight of the 24th a total 107mm was recorded on the Monday and Tuesday we had a repeat of the previous road closures but this time part of the major A61 trunk road from Sheffield to Barnsley was washed away resulting in its closure. I am thankful we live on the higher ground as parts of Hillsborough, Central Sheffield and the Don Valley were like a war zone on the Tuesday Morning. The events are well chronicled from various sources with many stunning photos and BBC Look North and Yorkshire Television reported the events. I even had emails from friends in Kenya asking if my wife and I were safe and well as it was on National Television there as well.

The total rainfall for the month was 318mm and it was indeed a record breaker.
Media Brief Week Commencing Monday 25th June 2007
This week will always be in the memory of the people of Sheffield and Rotherham. Sadly a few deaths occurred but so many people had to walk miles home in torrential rain with transport halted by flooding and road closures. The RAF helicopter crews were scrambled to the Don Valley to winch people from the roofs of industrial premises as the River Don burst its banks in The Lower Don Valley reclaiming its natural flood plain. The huge Shopping Complex at Meadowhall was flooded and was closed for a full we even now at the beginning of July only the upper floors are open as stock on the lower floors s damaged. In Brightside a rescue boat negotiated cars that were hurting along in the flood like missiles to rescue trapped people.
In the Hillsborough and Neepsend areas the river also burst its banks taking out a sub-station cutting off power to many homes in the process. Emergency accommodation was set up in various places. The pitch at Sheffield Wednesday Football Ground was flooded. Apartments near the town centre in Neepsend, Corporation Street and Nursery Street were flood on the ground floors. Parts of Heeley Bridge were flooded as the drains could not cope with the volume of water.
Overnight it was observed that the reservoir at Ulley was beginning to leak and the local villages in its path were evacuated. The M1 motorway was closed and just the other side of the motorway concern was expressed that if the wall burst a major power distribution site would be flooded and thousands of homes would loose power. A major emergency swung into action as many pumps were used to lower the level of the water behind the wall so that emergency work could take place.
The emergency moved downstream to Doncaster and I am sure other observers will file dramatic reports as areas in that town are still under water on the 3rd July. Rotherham Railway station is also still flooded and trains are not using it.

On Wednesday 27th in an approaching shower I observed a Funnel Cloud over The Woodhead Pass Area.
How did this event occur?
Thunderstorms and rain associated with the low pressure that tracked North East across the country 1000 – 1007 mbs saturated the ground and produced the conditions for further major flooding this total of 132 mm of rain over the 3 days was high causing flooding. The 14mm on the 17th together with the 24mm on the 19th, the 9mm on the 21st and finally the 6mm on the 22nd kept the ground wet with water continually running off.
All that was now needed were the right metrological conditions so far in this disappointing summer the Low Pressure Systems across the country have settled 300 miles South of their usual track to the North of Scotland.
The low 999mb Monday 25th and its strong winds maximum gust 30 mph were the cause. The original low moved North East and a further low pressure area formed off Cornwall and Devon. This combined with the warm air moving up from France and the colder drier air moving down from the North gave the right conditions for a slow moving band of heavy rainfall. This band sat over Northern England with its Southern Edge directly over Sheffield.

The rainfall started as I was finishing work at midnight on Sunday and continued until late Monday evening. The heaviest bursts were from 16.00 hours to 17.00 hours when rain was running down the roads like rivers and it was a nightmare journey home from work for those who made it home. Finally the rain moved away South Easterly.
Rain falling in such volumes on saturated ground just run off the 107mm that fell caused the flooding as it was in a period of 22 hours.

July 2007 was a quite month following all the mayhem of June 2007.

Temperature wise it was a month when the averages were as expected, the trend of warm months did not continue.

The floods in the Midlands were not seen in Sheffield again although it was a wet month 103mm was recorded and that was 178% of the average. 22mm rain fell on the 20th

There was a wind gust of 36.9 mph recorded on the 19th.

A rainbow was observed on the 3rd.

There were no thunderstorms during the month

August 2007 was an even quieter month than July 2007 which followed all the mayhem of June 2007.

Temperature wise it was a month when the averages were just above the average for the month.

It notable feature this month was the lack of rain. I recorded 25 mm in total which was 37% of the average there were only 7 days in the month when over 1 mm of rain was recorded the 1st to the 10th saw a dry spell in three days in the almost 50% of the total was recorded and the highest amount was 8 mm on the 14th from the 20th to the 31st another dry spell followed with on 2 mm of rain falling on the odd day.

There were two exceptional days of sunshine when I recorded 11.12 hours on the 23rd followed by 12.96 hours on the 24th.

There were no events of any significance to report during the month.

September 2007 was a quite and average month for temperatures. There was no windy spell of note either.
The main feature was the lack of rainfall. I recorded 35 mm which is 54% of the average. The first 18 days of the month were dry apart from 2nd when only 2 mm of rain was recorded then 6 of the next 7 days rain was recorded but not in any volume. Then the month ended on a dry note.

October 2007 was a quite month in more aspects than one.

The rainfall was 24% of the average giving another dry month following on from the previous month.

The strength of the wind was very noteworthy this month and could best be described as one with slack winds 1.9 mph was the mean wind speed recorded. At 09z when my readings are taken it was Calm for the 10 minute observation period on 13 occasions.

There were 4 days 18th – 21st when a ground frost was recorded.

Overall the temperatures were above normal

STATION NOTES.

December 2007 was an interesting month which started mild with a maximum of 14.4c recorded on the 6th and high temperatures at the end of the month. As the high pressure moved in on the 11th it was to remain as the dominant feature until the 22nd this gave 6 mornings when the wind was calm at 09z. This was a period of low temperatures with a minimum air temperature of -3.9c recorded on the 17th. During this period there were ground frosts on the period 11th to the 25th ground frosts were recorded 11 mornings. Nevertheless the mean temperatures were above average

The rainfall was slightly above average.

A rainbow was observed on the 2nd at 12.10 hours

On the 1st and the 2nd high winds were recorded on the 1st a maximum of 65.9 mph and on the 2nd a maximum of 55.9 mph.

On the evening of the 1st at 22.45 hours a line squall passed through the area there were 8 flashes of lightening with claps of thunder which lasted until 23.00 hours. Small hail was deposited on the ground 12mm deep and at 23.30 hours we had flurries of snow it was just after midnight that the high winds were recorded.

STATION NOTES.
January 2008 saw the New Year start with the breaking of records.
The Month began on a fairly quiet note but Winds began to pick up from the 5th and the mean wind speed for the month was 5.1 mph. The winds were from a southerly quadrant.
Rainfall was over average at 150mm this gave 183% of the average for January. There were 16 consecutive days from the 6th to the 21st inclusive when rain fell.
The month was also dull with 42.65 hours of sunshine recorded and a total of 14 Sunless Days.
It was a month when temperature records fell. The Mean Maximum was a+3.8c over the average for the month. The mean minimum was +3.7c and the mean was +3.7c. The 18th 13.8c, 19th 13.5c and 20th 13.5c were the maximum temperatures indicating just how mild it was.
A rainbow was observed on the 20th.

STATION NOTES.
It can be said the February 2008 was a strange month.
Rainfall was 86% of the average and the last day of the month produced 38mm.
Sunshine again was plentiful with 111.64 hours recorded and only 2 sunless days throughout the month.
Temperatures were always on the mild side with the exception of 6 days where the minimum was below zero. On the 20th at 09.00 hours it was -4.3c. On the mornings of the 19th and 20th at dawn the ground was covered with rime. The leaves and branches of the trees and other plants took on the appearance of a winter wonderland. On the 19th grauple also fell. In the month there was a total of 12 ground frosts.

STATION NOTES.
April 2008 was a month when the temperatures were just above the average and it felt a cool month. The month started with a brief warm spell and finished in the same manner. We had a minimum of -1.5c on the 6th and ground frost on 6 days. Small hail fell on 4 days and large hail on one of the same days.
This was the month when we had snow cover on one day the 17th and snow fell on 2 days.
The first thunder on the year was recorded on the 27th in a brief storm from 17.30 hours to 18.30 hours and there were 2 discharges.
Rainfall was just below the average although rain was recorded on 20 days but the most was 6mm on three different days within the month
The winds were from the South Westerly quadrant and it was also calm on 6 mornings.

STATION NOTES.

Rainfall was below average for the month of May with 47mm recorded, which is 80% of the average up to the 26th only 6mm fell and then 3 consecutive days of showers saw a total of 35mm falling.

The month was not a windy month but it was the direction which was the notable feature 20 days in total from a north/east quadrant with 11 days from the North East. This normally would have given a cold month in fact the air was from a warm source giving above average figures

Ground frosts were recorded on three mornings.

August 2008 began with a storm in the early hours of the morning of the 1st from 03.00 to 04.00 hours.

The temperatures were just above the August means. The month started with a warm spell and finished with a warm spell

The two prominent features of the month were the dullness of the month only 80.83 hours but with only 3 sunless days. The rainfall again was well over the average 113mm which is 164% of the local average. There were 19 Wet Days in total and the 16th gave the most rain 23mm.

STATION NOTES.
September 2008 was another average month temperature wise while rainfall was well above the September average
September was a remarkably calm month without any really strong winds a feature was at 09z I record calm conditions for 10 minutes on no less than 11 occasions.
Rainfall above average at 158% of the local average. Rain fell on 9 days at the start of the month with 23mm recorded on the 5th and 38mm in the hour on the 7th the rest of the month saw very little rain until the 16mm recorded on the 30th.
On the afternoon of 7th September we had a cloudburst over the North Sheffield Area between 16.00 hours and 17.00 hours. We had six flashes of lightning but within the hour we had a total of 38mm of rain. At the peak rain was falling at a rate of 158mm per hour. My garden was a waterfall and as I have just had all the drives block paved water poured onto the patio and at one stage it was 6 inches deep with the drains unable to come with the amount of falling precipitation.

On the evening of 9th September @ 21.00 hours two cloud to cloud discharges were observed.

A rainbow was observed in the showers on the 2nd.

A Double Rainbow was observed in a shower on the 3rd

October was an average month temperature wise.

Rainfall however was well above normal with a total of 155mm which is 209% of the average. Within the month there were 20 wet days. On the 4th 35mm was recorded and on the 25th 34mm was recorded.

The 28th of the month onwards say cold nights setting in under clear skies.

The winds again for an autumnal month were fairly calm with an average wind speed of 4.7 mph and winds from of southerly quadrant

STATION NOTES.

December was a typical December cold and grey the temperatures were just about on average.

A feature was a total of 18 days when a ground frost was recorded. An air frost was also recorded on 3 days.

It was a calm month with an average wind speed of 3.6 mph but the dominant feature was the number of calm days at 09z when I take my readings 10 in total. On the 21st High Pressure Started to build and the pressure remained high into January 2009. The highest wind gusts were recorded on the 19th and 20th.

It was a dry month with only 74% of the average rainfall recorded this was a total of 74mm with the highest fall of 13mm on the 13th

STATION NOTES.
January 2009 was an average January with the mean temperatures just slightly above average. The month started with a cold spell which ended on the 12th during period 5 air frosts were recorded with a minimum of -3.9c on the 10th. There were a total of 20 ground frosts within the month with the first 11 days of the month all with a ground frost.
Rainfall was just below average with no days of really heavy rainfall but there were 16 Wet Days within the month, Sleet and snow fell on 3 days within the month.
It was a calm month with a mean wind speed of 4.0 mph and I recorded calm conditions at 09z on 12 days with dense fog on the 29th
On the 17th pressure began to fall as a low was established and on the 23rd pressure fell to 973 mb and only rose again on the 27th as higher pressure was established.

STATION NOTES.
February 2009 was a dry but a slightly average month temperature wise despite having a very cold start. The cold start was offset by a mild end.
The interesting weather all happened at the start of the month with the first snow of any significance for a number of years. The first 11 days of the month saw snow falling and the snow lay on the ground through to the 14th.
Rainfall was below average 44 mm accounting for 55% of the average and this included snow melt. The 9th saw 9mm of rain falling. The month was fairly calm with a maximum gust on the 22nd of 30.9 mph. Westerly winds prevailed 9 days and also calm conditions on a further 9 days
The first 15 days of the month all saw a ground frost with air frost recorded on 8 days at the start of the month. It was not until the 11th that day time temperatures recovered with the highest temperature of 12.5c recorded on the 24th
