Hey guys, first time poster here. I browse AccuWeather and its forums quite a bit and decided to become a member!
ANYWAY, I came across these pics that feature a volcano that erupted last year in Chile, and I just really want to share them with you guys because they look like something out of a disaster flick! Any ideas why there's so much lightning? I got the pics from this website and they were confirmed to be real by snopes.com |

Anyway, I'm no weather expert, so I don't know why all the lighning. (My only guess is the heat from the volcano clashing with the colder air. I don't know). The last picture looks awesome. The lightning is all engulfed in the smoke. Looks crazy. Nice post. -------------------- "Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there." -John Wooden

That volcano is at it again! There are links to some pics on there, but I am of course firewalled from them. (I can't get on to Travelocity from work but I get a volcanism blog. I work in the travel industry. Figure that one out!)

That volcano is at it again! There are links to some pics on there, but I am of course firewalled from them. (I can't get on to Travelocity from work but I get a volcanism blog. I work in the travel industry. Figure that one out!) Lightning is the the difference in electrical potential between clouds, and various segments within different cloud formations and the ground. We all know the electrical potential we generate when we walk around on carpeted floors in a cold and dry environment and then go to touch a grounded object....ie. walking to the refrigerator and touching the metal handle and getting a shock from the static electricty we have built up in walking over the carpet. The clouds the were shown in the volcanoe pictures are loaded with dust particles....dust particles that 'brush' past each other within the cloud formation and build up electrical potential....once the electrical potential builds to a level that it's 'spark' can jump an air gap to a 'ground' (the ground can be a real Earth ground or another cloud that was built with the opposite electrical potential)...that 'spark' is the lightning we all know and love. The techno geeks of weather can write volumes and volumes of books to discribe the real science behind the phonomena of lightning. I just hit the basics. -------------------- Never too old to have a happy childhood! .......... ..........![]() Don't put an age limit on your dreams! |
