Happy E-Day everyone!!

January 8, 1935: Elvis Presley is born, along with his twin brother Jesse.

Happy 75th Birthday to the King of Rock and Roll!

January 11, 2001: AOL and Time Warner create largest merger in history

The Federal Communications Commission gave its approval for a multibillion-dollar merger between Internet giant America Online and entertainment and media behemoth Time Warner on this day in 2001. The decision was the final hurdle each side had to jump before creating a media company with $34 billion in annual revenue. The move cleared the way for the companies to combine their vast print, online, entertainment, and television resources into the world’s largest media company. The merger included such brand names as Time magazine, Warner Bros. film studio, CNN, and AOL.

January 12, 1932: First Female Senator is Elected

Voters in Arkansas elected Ophelia Wyatt Caraway, a Democrat, to the U.S. Senate on this day in 1932. It was the first time a female had been elected to the Senate. Caraway, born near Bakerville, Tennessee, had been appointed two months earlier to fill the seat left vacant by her husband, Thaddeus Horatio Caraway, when he died. Although Caraway was the first woman elected to the Senate, Jeannette Rankin, a pacifist from Montana, was the first woman elected to Congress, winning a seat in the House of Representatives in 1917.

January 13, 1807: Napoleon Bonaparte Buford is born

Union General Napoleon Bonaparte Buford was born on this day in 1807. When the U.S. Civil War broke out, the West Point graduate raised his own regiment, the 27th Illinois. Attached to the command of General Ulysses S. Grant, Buford fought gallantly on November 7, 1861, during the battle of Belmont, Missouri. Grant’s army drove the rebels from the battlefield, but the rebels returned after Grant’s men began plundering the area. Buford rallied his men and fought off a Confederate counterattack, saving the day.

Haha. I don't know how true that is, but it's in my History Channel Calendar so I guess it's gotta be close to true. It is kinda creepy. Especially cuz they were only married for 9 months and he sent flowers for over 18 years. Well your husband's pretty smart though. Like Papa Bear said, "plastic flowers never die."

p.s. I still have 351 more daily facts so everyone's gonna have to put up with this until January 1st of 2011 haha. Thanks Maw.

Thanks Bear. Today's event is a little bizarre and tragic.

January 15, 1919: Molasses Floods the Streets of Boston

A huge tank of molasses ruptured at the United States Industrial Alcohol Company in the heart of Boston on this day in 1919, flooding the streets and killing twenty-one people. It was nearly lunchtime when the bolts on the tank exploded, sending an eight-foot-high wave of molasses down the streets. The molasses swept away freight cars, knocked down a local firehouse, and killed five employees at the city’s Public Works Department. It took weeks to clean up the sticky mess. More than one hundred lawsuits were filed, and the company paid nearly $1 million in damages.

I probably won't be back on here during the weekend to post the history of the day, so I am going to post January 16 and 17 today. Sorry Bear, these ones aren't bizarre. But I took a peak at the weeks ahead and there is some interesting stuff coming up.

January 16, 1991: First Persian Gulf War Begins

The Persian Gulf War began on January 16, 1991, when a United Nations deadline calling for Iraq to withdraw its army from Kuwait ended. The Iraqis invaded Kuwait in August 1990. At 4:30 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, U.S. and British fighters launched from aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea began bombing runs over Iraq. At 7:00 p.m., the White House announced that Operation Desert Storm, the code name for the assault, was under way.

January 17, 1893: Americans Overthrow Hawaiian Monarchy

American sugar cane producers overthrew Queen Liliuokalani, the ruler of the Hawaiian Islands, on this day in 1893. The Americans established a new government with sugar planter Sanford Dole as the new president. Hawaii became the fiftieth state in 1959.

Actually, I think he only did the flower thing on her birthday.

Otherwise, Joe DiMaggio may have single-handedly saved the Los Angeles area florist industry!
