So my wife and I were out fishing on a remote lake in Maine where we have a camp, this biologist comes by and says he is going to look for a baby eagle (8 weeks old) that is not in his nest. Well, he comes back later holding the eagle and says he is going to put it back in the nest tomorrow, well we were there to take pictures, plus we caught some small bass to feed him. We just had my small Exilim camera but it did a great job, I bought my wife a expensive camera but we don't take it in the boat would have been nice to have it with a tripod and it's telephoto lens but these pictures look OK, I didn't get permission to post the biologists picture so these are limited. The eagle went out of the nest right away and is out on the branch in the picture.

Hey, very nice pictures, thank you for the PM alerting me to them. Eagles are incredible birds... I've always found it amusing just how different a baby eagle looks from an adult eagle. They've made an incredible comeback... when I was a kid I hardly ever saw eagles but now I see them on a regular basis. They are actually very close to coming off our endangered species list, and may do so by the end of the year.

I've never been to that part of the state but I'm glad that you got to enjoy some of our fine fishing and scenic opportunities. That camera seems to work fine by my eyes... very clear images and you can see the details of the eagle very well... nicely done.

We went to camp last night and went up to check on the eagle, hi mama was up in a tree where we could see her but she never gets close to us. Jr. was not in his tree, we walked around the island and he was on the ground, I didn't see him till he flew up into a tree (jumped me 1/2 to death) so we knew he was OK, we went fishing (the white perch were not biting again) so we caught him a few bass, we also have a loon that as soon as we start fishing comes over for a free meal and he can eat a lot of fish!! So we went back to feed him just before dark, he was still in the same tree and we left some fish for home at the bottom of the tree.

Sunday June 27, we went fishing at 10am, the fish were biting as we caught 165 fish in 4 hours, 114 white perch that I iced and filleted this morning, took 3 1/2 hours start to clean-up, and 41 yellow perch to feed to the eagle. We went to the island after we were done fishing and found him up in a pine tree, he was 30 feet off the ground, so we think he will be safe now, not on the ground is good. We left the fish at the bottom of the tree and when we were in the boat leaving we heard him calling for his mom, then we saw her flying overhead and she landed in a tree near by, she would probably wait for another boat that was fishing near the island to leave to check on her baby. We will be going back next weekend if the weather is OK.

No pictures this week, didn't see Jr. eagle, saw his mom though, The biologist sent me a link to the site where I can see the transmitter on the eagle and see where he is, his transmitter goes on every five days for 8 hours, it will last for 1 year before the battery goes dead. I hope to be at camp some day when it is on as I can load the GPS numbers into my unit and go find him.

I don't have any better eagle pictures, we were fishing Sunday (August 8) and the Loon came to 7 feet from the boat and swam around and under the boat, fishing was slow and it took a while to get him some lunch, it was great they are so pretty up close.
The eagles were around later and we dumped some fish in the water and watched them swoop down and pick them up, saw two adults and the juvenile eagle along with a bunch of ospreys.
It was a great day for bird watching, plus we caught 96 fish. (we have a fish counter now)

My wife and I were on vacation the week of August 16th, we stayed at camp and fished everyday, we feed the eagles fish everyday and by the end of the week they were up by our camp waiting for fish in the morning and evening, there are two adults and two juveniles now (juveniles don't get the white head and tails till around 4 years old).
Here is a picture my friend, Darrel, took of a juvenile eagle taking a fish he threw to it, he has the fish in his right claw.

I can't believe the size of that "baby"!! I know they get big, but I've never seen one up close. Every January/February they have eagle watching weekends around here. I'm going this year! Thanks for sharing your pics!

I emailed the Eagle man about the water being low in the lake and he also said the baby eagle spent the winter in Maryland and is now working it's way back to Maine.

We have two "pet" loons that come right to the boat now and will eat a fish right from your hand.
