Hey everyone,
While asking a contact of mine thru the NSSL about the system in question, I found out that there is no deployment scheduled for the MPAR system. For those of you who don't know, it takes an AEGIS radar system from the USN and applies it to weather aspects. Right now, we have 3 Ticonderoga class cruisers that are in the 'stricken to be disposed of' status. Each ship has 4 AEGIS radars, so that makes 12 radars that can be deployed across the USA in strategic spots. Instead of allowing the ships to be used in a SINKEX with radars intact, sink exercise for testing battle preparedness of our and allied forces, deploy them to the NWS. The current WSR88-D system scans roughly every 4.1 minutes, while the MPAR system scans the skies at 30 seconds. Please contact your state Senator and/or Representative showing your support of the MPAR system to be deployed. jdrenken QUOTE To Your Senator:
The Honorable (full name) (Room #) (Name) Senate Office Building United States Senate Washington, DC 20510 Dear Senator: To Your Representative: The Honorable (full name) (Room #) (Name) House Office Building United States House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 I come before you as a weather enthusiast that is concerned of the non-deployment status of the MPAR system utilized by the NWS for early warning of severe storms. This system will provide meteorologist even more leadtime to warn communities of tornadoes, derechos, hail, flash flooding, and severe winter storms. As it stands, we have 3 Ticonderoga class cruisers sitting in 'stricken to be disposed of' status. Each cruiser holds 4 radar arrays that could contribute a total of 12 across the country. This also will help with the Homeland Security component of the MPAR system as we will have a better reaction time to respond with multiple systems at strategic points in the country. Sincerely, -------------------- |
