About 50mph as well. Down here in SoCal, we don't usually get any extreme wind events in the LA basin, though we do get gusty winds from time to time. That 50mph wind was from some very strong offshore North winds. The highest gust I've seen from onshore winds is pretty close to it and is about 46mph, which was associated with the far northern section of a thunderstorm. Other areas around me can get much more powerful winds and 45mph gusts aren't that unusual in the high deserts and mountains.

Last year I was in vegas and there was sustained winds 40mph with gusts above 60. I remember I was trying to ride my bike but since I was going into the wind it wasn't worth it and I just ended up walking. Here in riverside we get decent gusts but nothing outstanding. Turns out there are no hurricanes in So Cal

On August 8th, 2001 Grand Forks was hit with a 100 mph thunderstorm wind gust associated with a line of thunderstorms that were moving about 60 mph. Trees and powerlines were down all over the place. It came so fast that I wasn't in my interior closet when the winds slammed into my apartment building (and I was watching it come in via The Weather Channel). I was without power until early the next afternoon. And I got off work too!

Umm, probably about 80 mph (gusts), though the estimates I've seen for the winds that night vary. Severe thunderstorms on July 16-17, 2005, came through Winnipeg bringing intense lightning and powerful winds, and lasted a good long time too. Caused quite a bit of damage in the city. There were downburst winds of 100 mph in the area of Kildonan Park -- not quite my area, but not too far away.
Of course, I only watched the storms from indoors... I didn't go out in the winds, rain, and hail to experience them directly. |

Mid March 2010 storm, gusts nearly reached 70 mph. Felt like I was in the eyewall of an unnamed Category 1 hurricane.

101mph... Haha, my place of birth. Pretty cool. The strongest winds I've ever experienced were in the 75-85 MPH range during the July 2nd Tornado outbreak of 1997. Some of the gusts were over 100 MPH along the Detroit river and sadly caused several deaths. -------------------- 2012 - 2013 Winter

I don't know if I've been in winds that were extremely strong, but I guess I saw some gusts closing in on 60 mph in the July 11, 2011 derecho.

Hurricane Ike's remnants in Ohio. It was i think a depression or less when it reached me. Some strange phenomenon happened with the sun and the clouds that made 40-50mph sustained winds and 70-110 mph gusts. I think this was September of 2007. My house lost some shingles, our 6 foot fence was blown away with nothing left, trees, power lines, were all blown down. I lost power for a day and had no school for 4 days. Some people had no power for 2 weeks in Dayton. All i heard that day was gun-shot like cracks which was trees and fences being ripped to shreds.
My experience standing in the 100mph gusts? ~Blown off my feet with bruises on my ankles. Other than that, it felt so fun to get blown down by the winds!! Anyone remember this? This post has been edited by Juniorrr: Aug 14 2011, 08:24 PM |

Mid March 2010 storm, gusts nearly reached 70 mph. Felt like I was in the eyewall of an unnamed Category 1 hurricane. The aftermath of the storm made it feel like one too... Felt the same way here, and the damage was most pronounced across New Jersey and Southeast New York. Don't know off the top of my hand just how many trees were downed in that storm, but damage was extensive. I remember the winds buffeting my car on the way home from work that Saturday ( at 2 pm in the afternoon ), and going to work for a 6 am shift on Sunday allowed me to see some more damage ( mostly downed trees ). Thankfully I didn't lose power at all during that event. The only other system that came close was a blizzard during the 2010/2011 winter storm season, only other time I heard the winds howling as bad as that March 2010 storm. |

Hurricane Floyd downgrading to Tropical Storm Status. There were 80 mph winds with gust of 90 mph. Very frightening.

I remember a storm when I was living in Rapid City as a teenager (so, I guess, late 80's or early 90's)...it was a winter storm and then it got soooo windy and soooo cold...it was literally like 25 degrees below zero but the windchill was 70 below zero....I can't remember how fast the wind was, but it was absolutely howling in our chimney all night.
Our dogs happened to run away that night too....one ended up getting taken in by someone and returned the next day...the other, I found her down the road with freezing feet, poor thing...but she was okay. -------------------- Midwest transplant always hoping for exciting weather in Philly....

For me it would be March 13, 2010 at Kennedy Airport in NYC. I was working that day and we were supposed to get winds around 50mph that day, but ended up getting steady winds around that mark with countless gusts well over 60mph all afternoon through the evening. A few gusts reached as high as 75mph. The sound of that wind I'll never forget. Heard it again in Irene.
Though I have to say there are two possible storms that could have topped that mark. First- I have no idea exactly how strong the winds during Hurricane Bob were back in '91. I've read that it put up gusts over 150mph in Cape Cod and 162mph measured by a ship in that area. Here, it was probably in the 80mph range. I do know that I've never seen as many tree branches down as there were that day. And second- a t-storm back in the summer of '89 had 80mph downburst winds right after an F2 tornado lifted about 1/2 mile west of my house according to the NWS reports, but again there was no equipment nearby to actually measure it. Probably would have been trashed by the baseball sized hail though. This post has been edited by thundercloud: Aug 13 2012, 08:40 AM -------------------- Artie/NY
