I'm surprise this topic hasn't been started.
It's insane the number of aftershocks, seems like its like every 5-10mins. Above 5.x! http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/rec.../quakes_big.php |

Sirens just sounded on Tokyo webcam. CNN reporting a 6.6 magnitude quake just struck.

What's mindblowing is only 17 views for this thread! Amazing, largely unedited footage of the Sendai tsunami... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTwnxVIlWss |

Does anyone have any information on the radioactive particles japan has released lately? I guess the wind currents blew it out to sea or whatever but what does that mean for the US?

I am surprised why there isn't more people commenting and discussing this devastating topic as well. Perhaps it's because it's overseas..I don't know.
To answer the above posters question. Here is one of the sites that I am currently looking at for the Nuclear situation there: http://mitnse.com/ |

Whats scary is Japan is not out of the woods yet in terms of natural disasters. The last time Mount Fuji errupted was in 1707. http://www.airies.or.jp/publication/ger/pdf/06-2-05.pdf 6 weeks before it errupted a 8.6 earthquake struck. This was Japans largest earthquake until the 8.9 last week. http://www.kosmix.com/topic/1707_hoei_earthquake
On avg. it erupts every 30 years. Its now been over 300 since its last eruption. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/20...mount-fuji.html Former date of Japans largest earthquake The Hoei Earthquake, October 28, 1707. Measuring between 8.4 and 8.6 Mt Fuji started erupting on December 16, 1707. Japans new largest earthquake March 11, 2011. 8.9. This post has been edited by stxprowl: Mar 16 2011, 08:38 PM |

Does anyone have any information on the radioactive particles japan has released lately? I guess the wind currents blew it out to sea or whatever but what does that mean for the US? Acid Rain is possible for the Pacific Northwest from that same storm. The winds must blow towards the N, NNE, NE, ENE, and E at all times to get rid of the remaining radiation. -------------------- CURRENT IEM/OEM SET: Meelec M6(MSRP $49.99), VSonic GR06 (MSRP $49.99), Meelec CC51(MSRP $80), Beyerdynamic DTX 910 (MSRP $89.99), Future Sonics Atrio X (MSRP $99.99),Ultrasone HFI-450 (MSRP $119.99), JVC HA-FXT90 (MSRP $135.00)

I don't think the amount of radiation being released is any concern for the West Coast. The amounts of radiation being detected around Fukushima are very very small, not even life-threatening. The last I heard they had detected radiation in cows milk and tap water, etc, but so small that you'd have to drink that milk for a year straight to get the same amount of radiation as a CT Scan, and that is only in the immediate vicinity of Fukushima, with radiation being detected in Tokyo tap water (which is about 180miles away). Still, it's not enough to be life-threatening or pose any type of radiation-borne illness.
What's really *bleep*ing me off about this is all the pseudoscience BS being posted on the internet and being spat out on some of the media outlets. I grew up about 60mi (as the crow flies) from Three Mile Island, along with my family, and millions of other people and we are all fine. Even Chernobyl only produced a handful of immediate deaths and about 4,000 long term deaths. You'll find a lot of anti-nuclear energy quacks saying that this is the end of the world and that California is going to be blanketed with radiation, which is simply not true. People in California that use tanning beds (99% of the population, lol) probably do more harm (skin cancer related) to themselves than this radiation from Japan ever will. Sorry to rant about this but some people I know think that this is going to be the end of the world and I received an e-mail today from a family member with a link to this quack "doctor" spouting all kinds of unfounded statements and holistic BS. It's easy to do research and come up with your own educated thoughts on what is going on, but unfortunately there are a lot of uneducated people that simply believe or take for fact what they read on the internet or hear in the news, and they simply don't have the intelligence (or desire) to research and learn or look objectively with a scientific approach to what they hear or read. I digress. |

I digress. No...I think your interpretation is accurate...The Physics of nuclear power and radiation is hard to comprehend or understand...especially in that the particles are invisible and exist for a very, very long time..that is why long term radiational exposure is so dangerous...too many dangers to elucidate here further.... -------------------- Perception is everything

Another big aftershock 7.1 reported late Thursday Japan time.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-13005110 Nice write-up on the chances of a Tokyo quake...although it would likely have less magnitude, it would be more damaging...at least from the earthquake itself. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-12792943 |
