Snowing heavily today in the mountain regions of Romania.
Also it's raining heavily in Bucharest at the moment, the temperature is 8C, quite a difference from the 29 on Friday. I am moderately excited about this cold shot and snow in October because in 2009 snow came early in October and the winter turned out to be great, however in 2008, snow came early as well but the winter turned out in the end to be a mild one. Anyway, autumn needed such an extreme weather event in order to put an end to the "late summer pattern" that has been with us since the beginning of September. -------------------- Declared Snowaholic

Well howdie out there. I'm a newbie on the meterological front but wondering whats the prognosis for Ireland this winter. We'd our first snowy winter in 20 years in 2010 last year. Will the forecast blocking high pressure system in the north Atlantic keep us warm while Europe further east freezes? Any thoughts?
Last week we had ~17 C, this week is looking like averaging ~ 13 C so heading the right way. |

Accuweather will publish the winter forecast for Europe on Wednesday next week.
http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/euro/stor...i-hear-snow.asp From what they say, not so good news for UK. Let's hope that this winter the core of the cold weather will shift east toawards the Balkans. -------------------- Declared Snowaholic

If Siberian high-pressure is active in winter, many times east of Europe is lucky for harsh winter. I dont say that history says |

Here is a short video i made from the first snow in Varna, Bulgaria for this winter. It came too early with a super cyclone witch hit with 25m/s wind gusts, big waves, and nearly 170 mm summary precipitation. Of course almost all of the precipitation was rain and less was wet snow. Further north from Varna in Shabla city the precipitation hit 300 mm.

Snow has been reported at higher elevations in Romania, generally above 900m.
The same cyclone brought high winds in the south of the country but mostly on the Black Sea coast. Romania's Black Sea coast has not been so affected as the Bulgarian coast further south, however it was a powerful cyclone due to the warm sea in contrast with the cold air. The winter forecast from ECMWF looks good for the Balkans and Eastern Europe and in line with the hints we've been getting from Accuweather regarding thier forecast (warmer for the UK). Is Accuweather issue Winter forecast? Last week in European blog a writer said that next wednesday or Thursday we will issue winter forecast about Europe. |

Looks pretty simmilar the ECMWF forecast you posted!
I am worried about the precipitation though. I hope that with the onset of colder weather towards the start of winter, more precipitation will come over S-E Europe. The drought is still persiting in this area. -------------------- Declared Snowaholic

For Turkiye, we are not worry about precipitation because many of times in winter, if cold systems come from north, mediterranean produce low pressures. However I think for Hungary you should not worry about it because in Accuweather forecast worst of snowfalls are marked on you. |

just as i expected speaking of the accu forecast ... and i expect cold stepping in big time in late October in their WORST of THE WINTER area .. and if the blocking is where they say it will be u wont need to question whether it will snow or it wont cause u wont be able to clean it and by the end of the winter ull get tired of snow....
p.s. finally a winter in SE-Europe , centered over macedonia , serbia , bulgaria and romania ... was about time for this to happen This post has been edited by L1nk1g: Oct 21 2011, 11:20 AM --------------------
