The Myans prediction is based upon some astronomical alignment with the Earth, Moon and several planets being in alignment and all on their nearest approach to the Sun.
Recently, a theory has been floated that a alignment of the Earth, Moon & Sun in January 1912 is the 'proximate' cause of the sinking of the Titanic.
