Is a non rotating tornado possible and has it ever happened? Like a non rotating updraft extended to the ground just like a tornado.

A tornado with no rotation is a cloud (or scud).
There would be no dynamic motion if there wasn't rotation present, therefore there would be no tornado. -------------------- -Mike P

But wouldn't the updraft have enough strength to at least pull someone off the ground? That would be like a strong gust from inflow or outflow in a strong thunderstorm. Usually you need some form of rotation or other dynamics to create those types of winds. -------------------- Snowfall 2007-2008 season-11.4 inches

Is a non rotating tornado possible and has it ever happened? Like a non rotating updraft extended to the ground just like a tornado. Tornadoes actually start out as a rotating column along the horizontal axis. Once the shear gets involved, it tilts upwards. So...it is impossible for a tornado to be non-rotating as it already is. However, you could consider landspouts and gustnadoes falling into your question...just backwards as they extend to the cloud base from the ground instead of the other way around. -------------------- |

I've personally seen cases in Oklahoma where an updraft is strong enough to lift some dust a couple hundred feet into the air, but it's not like your going to do any damage with that kind of energy though.
