I wanted to start a thread for the unseasonable chill that we have experienced here in the Northeast, rather than simply posting in the latest storm thread and long-range spring 2012 thread. Here in Binghamton, NY, we may be looking at our first daily record low temperature since June 30, 2010 by this weekend (the only record low all decade to date was that one in June 2010).

Down here in the Southern Mid Atlantic, temps were about normal yesterday and should get there today if the sun finds its way out. A little cooler for the weekend and then it looks like Spring/Summer rearrives in the middle of next week. |

Agreed...hopefully all pans out as antisipated and this will end up being the last weeked of "Chilly" weather, because it's time for sustained "Warm" weather baby |

Eating an apple while walking around with smell of firewood in the air. Feels like Fall.
Here's how the daily data looks for Hartford & Bridgeport, CT last 4 days. Today should look similar. Kinda surprised the night lows are more normal but the day highs are below. This post has been edited by NorEaster07: Apr 26 2012, 04:12 PM -------------------- Snow Totals Per Season:

QUOTE COLD AIR CONTINUES TO FILTER IN...AND BASED ON A MAV/NAM MOS BLEND...HAVE CONVERTED THE FREEZE WATCH THAT HAD BEEN POSTED TO A FREEZE WARNING...ADDING A FEW ADJACENT ZONES WHERE CONFIDENCE WAS HIGH ENOUGH. HAVE ALSO GONE WITH A FREEZE WATCH FOR TONIGHT FOR THE ZONES THAT ARE MORE QUESTIONABLE. MOS HAS TRENDED COLDER...SO WILL ALLOW DAY SHIFT TO SEE IF THIS TREND CONTINUES AND UPGRADE TO WARNINGS IF NECESSARY. LEFT OUT ANY MENTION OF FROST AS DEWPOINT DEPRESSIONS AND WINDS DO NOT FAVOR FROST FORMATION Albany QUOTE A WIDESPREAD HARD FREEZE IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE ENTIRE AREA TONIGHT
INTO SATURDAY MORNING...AND THUS A FREEZE WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR ALL ZONES WHERE THE GROWING SEASON IS UNDER WAY. WHAT WILL NOT BE TYPICAL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR IS THAT USUALLY WHEN TEMPS DROP INTO THE 20S IN LATE APRIL IT IS DUE TO RADIATIONAL COOLING...BUT TONIGHT THERE WILL BE A PERSISTENT BREEZE SO WHAT WILL BE EXPERIENCING IS ADVECTIVE SUB-FREEZING TEMPS. SATURDAY WILL BE BREEZY...BUT NOT AS WINDY AS FRIDAY DUE TO A WEAKER PRESSURE GRADIENT. AFTER A COLD START TO THE DAY...TEMPS WILL WARM REASONABLY WELL DUE TO STRONG LATE APRIL SUN ANGLE BUT WILL STILL END UP AROUND 5-10 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL This post has been edited by NorEaster07: Apr 27 2012, 05:43 AM -------------------- Snow Totals Per Season:

As of 8 PM, it is 34 degrees at the Greater Binghamton Airport. We only have to drop six degrees to reach the record low for today (28 in 2002) and tomorrow (28 in 2004). Our 22-month record low temperature drought may be over very soon. (BTW, our longest record high temperature drought was 15-plus months, from Oct. 31, 2003 to Feb. 6, 2005).

Somehow it's almost May and we have this: ![]() Washington DC's record low at DCA is 38 and we've got a shot. It's currently 54 as we've dropped off a tad slower than it could have but that should speed up in the next hour or two. Further north where the core of the cold air is..yikes!! |

QUOTE SHORT TERM /8 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/... CHALLENGE TNGT IS AMOUNT OF DECOUPLING AND RESULTANT LOW TEMPS. ACROSS THE INTERIOR...THE LATEST DATA SUPPORTS THE PREV FCST SO LITTLE CHANGE MADE. ACROSS THE E...MODEL DATA SUPPORTS THE COOL REGIME...BUT THIS WILL NOT PLAY OUT IF WINDS DON/T DIMINISH ENOUGH. HAVE LEANED TOWARDS WINDS DIMINISHING SUFFICIENTLY NEAR THE COASTS LATE TNGT TO SUPPORT NEAR FREEZING TEMPS. DROPPED THE TEMP TREND LATER THAN THE NORMAL DIURNAL CURVE HOWEVER. THE FREEZE WATCH HAS THEREFORE BEEN CONVERTED TO A WRNG. INTERIOR ZONES RUN THE GREATEST RISK OF A TRUE HARD FREEZE. QUOTE HOWEVER...IF WINDS DO NOT LOWER ESPECIALLY OVER COASTAL AND EASTERN SECTIONS TOWARDS LATE THIS EVENING...LOW TEMPS MAY NEED TO BE CHANGED WITH LOWS MORE IN THE MID 30S INSTEAD OF LOW 30S ON AVERAGE. INTERIOR ZONES EXPECTED TO DROP INTO UPPER 20S ON AVERAGE...MAKING FOR A HARD FREEZE -------------------- Snow Totals Per Season:

We had our first daily record low temperature since June 2010, when the minimum reached 26 degrees. In addition, it was our coldest day this late in the spring since the late 1970s. We have a chance at record lows both tomorrow and Monday morning, which means we may be looking at our first multi-record low month since July 2009, which coincided with our Adirondack vacation.

We can put an end date on this cool spell--May 1 would be the end date. BTW, if we end up having a similar length of time between record lows as the one between June 30, 2010 and today, we will have to wait until Feb. 25, 2014. LOL! 2011 was the first year in history with no record low temperatures in our area.

We might see a return of the trough in East as models starting to hint.
I'm starting to believe the "normal" or "slightly" above normal temps later this week will be temporary. Euro has 12z 850 Temp anomalies May 8th. ![]() GFS 850 Anomalies. May 9th-May13th ![]() Waiting for this to update but PNA might be negative for just a few days and NAO positive for a few.
