Considering there's actually snow this winter, I'm trying to map out the winter to date totals again... so far I only used the NWS totals (except for northern Maine and VA), which as far as I'm aware at least barely have snow totals across the region; this is what I got so far. I can add reports to this map of season to date totals (through 1/31).

Scale:
Yellow - T-5"
Light blue - 5-10"
Mod. blue - 10-20"
Dark blue - 20-30"
Red - 30-40"
Dark red - 40-50"

Stewartstown, PA (drop your pin 38 miles N of downtown Baltimore, just over PA line 4 miles east of I-83)

2012-2013
November - Total 0.5" (slush trace on 11/7, flurries 11/25, 11/26, 0.5" on 11/27)
December - Total 5.5" (flurries 12/21, 12/22, 2" 12/24, 1.5" on 12/26, 0.5" on 12/27, 1.5" on 12/29, flurries 12/30)
January - Total 2" (0.25" on 1/6, 0.25" on 1/24, 1.5" on 1/25, dusting 1/28)
February - Total 1.5" and counting (0.5" on 2/1, 1" on 2/2)

That's a whopping 9.5" thus far this winter. FWIW we are lagging behind 2011-12 here despite it being colder:

2011-2012
October - Total 8.5" (all fell on 10/29)
November - 0
December - Total 1.75" (1" on 12/7, 0.25 on 12/17, 0.5" on 12/29)
January - Total 3.5" (0.25" on 1/3, 3" on 1/21, 0.25" on 1/29)
February - Total 5.5" (1" on 2/4, 1.5" on 2/8, 1.5" on 2/10, 1.5" on 2/11)
March - 0 (flurries on 3/5)
April - 0 (Trace each on 4/11 and 4/23)

Total of 2011-2012 was 19.25". Take out the October event and you have 11.75".

Only the 12/24/12 storm has completely covered the grass this winter. How sad. Last year it got covered on 1/21 by itself and then in the 2/10-11 combo. The good news is one or two even moderate events will put us in the running to top 2011-12 at least and there's still Feb into Mar to go.

I think the winter of 2007-08 was close to as snowless as this year in this area but I did not move until April 2008. I recorded 11 or 12" in Timonium, MD

--------------------
Fall Countdown - Intervale, NH
First sub 50 low - 8/15
First sub 45 low - 9/9
First sub 40 low - 9/13
First sub 35 low - 9/15
First frost - 9/15
First subfreezing low - 10/31
First sub 30 low - 10/31 (low for season 30F 10/31)

Thanks for the reports so far. These are the winter totals through 1/31, using the same scale as in the first post (blank marks are for NWS reports, dotted marks are for reports from forum).

With the latest totals and a little bit of "signature hunting" (adding snow totals from signatures), these are the latest totals, starting to give a rough idea of where snow totals stand this winter so far:

Sussex, NJ, in the "valley" between Mountian Creek and High Point.

Both the ski resort at Creek and the HP Monument visible from my house.

I've been doing some "signature hunting" and yours came up... I'm trying to gather enough totals to make a contoured map, so far there's enough for I-95 from DC to Boston, although there's still some locations missing reports:

- central-eastern Long Island
- Delmarva Peninsula/southern NJ
- SE New England
- central Pennsylvania
- Virginia

Anyone else wants to add their total to the snow census? This is the last chance before the Friday storm potentially dumps snow in parts of the region and significantly changes this map...

Thanks for the above reports! Sure no one else wants to send in a report through 1/31? This is the last chance before the Friday storm... it will be very interesting to see how the late Jan map compares to the late Feb map.

I'm going to try this again at the end of February... the comparisons between late January and late February will be very, very interesting to say the least.
