Do you use a DSLR? While I don't primarily do weather photography, it is an interest of mine (especially since I'm a Meteorology major). I love my new Nikon D40 DSLR. I'm interested to see if others (mainly being those that post on to Accuweather's photo gallery) use DSLRs or just plain digital cameras.

I have used the old SLR 35 mm Viitar works great durable but now to process film well I don't have that many pennies. I went out and no joke bought over 5 point and aim digital cameras. total cost over $1000.00 now I just bought my cannon rebel with extar lens etc tsuff bag tripod, filters for about $800.00 I should of done this a long time ago. Like anything you have to practice, practice, and more practice. The good part you can shoot upwards to 500 pictures on a dish, then star over. --------------------

yes i do ... i have a nikon d200 with several different lenses that i use.. 28-100mm that i seem to use the most.. a 70-300mm zoom, a great 50mm and for wider stuff the 18-55mm.. tthat lense is the least favorite of mine.. i need to upgrade it, it came with the camera..
my first digital was a sony f-717 that i feel in love with.. 5mp.. then decided to step it up to nikon d70 and from there i was hooked for sure.. kept my nikon n65 film camera just incase, but have since put it away.. I've taken some decent pictures of clouds and at concerts over the last few years. I am definately going to upgrade my camera in the near future. I was hoping some of the photographers here could give me some advice. -------------------- Where are we going? And why are we in this handbasket?

I don't own a DSLR and I don't want one either.
I carry my camera everywhere with me and I wouldn't want to have to carry lenses around as well. So my camera does me fine and I'm pleased with the results. -------------------- My photo website:

I use a DSLR for the flexibility it gives me in settings. It's very difficult to try and shoot tricky weather phenomena like lightning or dark sky events with a point and shoot where as I can dial in a few quick settings and take long exposures even in broad daylight to try and capture that cool or specific shot I am looking for.
As for my kit, it's a very simple beginner's DSLR kit: Pentax K200D DSLR Camera Body Pentax 18-55mm Lens Pentax 50-200mm Lens Manual Remote Shutter Switch Cable A sturdy tripod |

I'd love to have one, i've seen DSLR pictures and the quality is miles ahead of normal digital photos, but they're far too costly for me!

I have 2 cameras I use...
A point and shoot Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28....18x optical zoom, many great feautres and takes beautiful pictures. Most of the pictures I've posted on AWPG have been from that camera. I recently bought a used Canon Rebel from my pro photographer friend who upgraded her old DSLR. I paid $250 for the body and then I bought a cheap Sigma lens for $90....I wanted to make sure I liked the camera before I spent and real money on a lens. So far that has been a very good lens for a beginner like me. There has been a HUGE learning curve, and I was horribly depressed when I first started using the Canon...I always thought I was a "good" photographer...but I quickly learned that my Lumix did most of the work for me and that helped me take good pictures. I have a lot to learn, but I am definitely improving and will be looking to upgrade my lens in the future. ![]() -------------------- ![]() |

DSLRs are almost mandatory to get a true quality image. The point and shoots that would give the same quality image cost the same as DSLRs anyways! The key is to spend as little as possible on the camera, and as much as possible on the lens, because the lens will last forever (as long as you stick to the same system) and cameras get replaced all the time. The quality of the glass in the lens makes all the difference!

Yes, I use a Nikon D3100, mostly for time lapses. I have three lenses for it:
Standard 18-55mm Nikon Lens Nikon 55-200mm Lens Optika 0.8X Fisheye Lens I don't really like the fisheye lens though, because it's not full-frame and the quality isn't very good. I want to purchase a better lens, a Sigma full-frame lens with sharp quality, but it costs around $600. I'll get it in a couple of months. -------------------- Temecula Seasonal Precipitation 2015-2016: 6.71" (-0.38") Normal to-date precipitation: 7.09" Season began July 1st, 2015. I have a Nikon D7000 that I purchased after buying a Sony Alpha100. So I now have 2. Anyone want to purchase a Sony Alpha DSLR for $450 with lens and case? Ha ha. I don't use it very often. Works fine but my Nikon is 100x better!
