Signatures, 200px Signature Size Limit SET! Options

It is hereby decided that 200 PIXELS is the limit for this Forum, and hereby amended (3/8/10) that the sig shall also not exceed 200 KB in size when text and images are added up. I am a mod on other forums and signatures have always been a problem, they get so huge that they overshadow the post, have way too much animation, and just are a PITA. I see the same thing here, and it is out of control. You should consider a limit to the the size of them

I don't think they're a problem. The mods here do a great job. I remember once when my signature was too big, Jesse, the admin. told me to resize it. No one seems to be compaining about it and I feel as if the signature is part of me and shows who I am. Some members have no signs, others do.

I don't see an issue with the signatures...if they are too big, we have to ask people to resize them or edit them in a last resort...I don't think they overshadow the posts..

I don't see a problem with it either. The only time it's a problem is when you're scrolling through a bunch of posts, but it's so common for people to post four or five model (weather models, not the other kind, though that might be nice too) images in a page that a long signature doesn't seem to be a problem. It's also a really easy way to search out posts of a certain person. There are a few sigs that I recognize easily and whos creators have posts that I respect in general, so I stop and read them.


One exception to my not disliking the long sigs is starsinmysky's, I don't like John Mayer so I consider his an eyesore

I don't have a problem with signatures. Everyone with one or two lines in your sig, look below it, there's a bunch of empty space that's gonna be there either way. So I really don't see a problem with it.

Bl1zzard though, I do have a problem with you dislike for John Mayer, but I think that's a topic for EE.

If you don't like it, go to your control panel and utilize the "disable signatures" option....then you won't see any.

BTW, welcome to the forums...hopefully once you solve this issue, you'll enjoy your time here!

No problem....I'm getting there myself!!

After being here almost a year, sometimes I forget all the little things that my Control Panel can do!!! I only remembered this one because someone else brought it up a few months ago, and that is what Weathermatrix told them to do!!

Feel free to use the winter forecasts in my sig, with your own city and forecasts

I don't like them to be blocked out, so I never use that feature. Sometimes people have blog links in them, which I can easily click on them.

However, you are correct. There needs to be some sort of limit on size. I mean, a few images and links are alright, but it gets out of hand when the signatures are larger than the post itself!

It is absolutely an issue. I am going to open up a poll later today to set a good size once I do some research on standards. I'm closing this thread until I get a chance to to do that.

REMEMBER: You can turn off everybody's signatures off in your My Controls/Board Settings.

OK I have added the following image showing different potential sig sizes, including ALL text and images heights added together. (If you don't know, a "SIG" file is the optional signature beneath each person's post.)



I personally don't like seeing anything more than 200 pixels, and, in fact, am annoyed by my OWN sig file today (normally 75, but extended to 300 by the "ebay ad") which is one of the reasons that I wanted to put this up to a vote.

When trying to read a thread, think how much of your screen is taken up by the Sig files when you are scrolling down a page...

After 25 votes have been cast, we will close this poll and make the new height a rule, for which people can be Warn'd or have their sigs removed if they don't comply.

I'm with you Jesse. Anything over 200 pixels is pretty annoying. I've always kept a pretty small signature (it's around 150 pixels high now) and I think it's plenty big enough to put a decent amount of info in and not big enough to detract from posts/annoy users.

I agree with Jesse too. I don't want to turn off the signatures. I like to see them, but 200 pixels is plenty. They don't need to overshadow the post.

My sig is about as high as my member info to the left. So I think that should be the limit, if it's bigger than you info.

Mine's fairly small, I agree that it should be 200 pixels high.

Large signatures don't bother me.

In fact, there weren't too many people complaining about them.
