Which collges have meteorology classes and major in it? I know Penn State has a great department. I took a few classes while I was undergraduate there. I think its only on the main campus in State College, PA. Very respected program. I think there was a time when 50% of all meteorologists came from there (I may be dated myself with that comment as its been a few years since I was there). -------------------- Monsoon

Which collges have meteorology classes and major in it? Hi there. There are less than 50 schools in the country that offer Meteorology, so it is important to know what type of weather you are interested in studying, as different locations in the country tend to have emphasis on different kinds of weather. Also important is whether or not you can attend a state school in your state, as they will cost much less. The good northeast schools are: Lyndon State College, VT Plymouth State College, NH SUNY Oswego SUNY ALbany SUNY Stony Brook SUNY Brockport SUNY Oneonta Cornell University Western Connecticut State University Rutgers Penn State Ohio State University Millersville University and MIT has an Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences program. I could name some other good schools around the country if you'd like. But most of them are in the Northeast. I attended the Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences program my freshman year at MIT -- found it extremely challenging and interesting, but not exactly focusing on what I wanted, so I transferred to Millersville University, which is where I currently attend. The AMS has a mini-site with lots of info: Listing of Colleges & Universities.
What exactly are you looking for? And where? As a disclaimer, I go to Millersville and love it. We have a great Earth Science Department with good facilities. I debated between Millersville and Plymouth, but ended up choosing Millersville because of cost, distance and the fact that it was slightly larger. -------------------- Millersville Meteorology

Yes, I very much wish to become an operational meteorologist/hydrologist. Anthony Wow... i really have to thank you alot!!! i never really new about millersville until you said something!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR INTRODUCING THIS COLLEGE TO ME!!! I will most likely go with this college now i looked it up and everything looks great!! Thank you so much!!!! Oh sry one question.... is this a well known school for meteorology because depending on what field i go into this school may or may not help enough? I most likely will go into 3 fields: Tropical, severe weather, or winter.... with any of these also the common knowledge of the basics of meteorology!! -------------------- Tylor

Yes, Millersville offers a strong, challenging, nationally known program in meteorology. I will tell you though, all undergraduate meteorology programs in the nation are essentially the same, give or take. It is not until graduate school that you enter into different concentrations. As a rule of thumb, northeastern schools are the winter storm schools, U of Miami is the Tropical school, among a few others, and U of Oklahoma is the severe weather school, among others.
