I'll describe mine in 3 words...
"Next Summer Please!" If you read my signature, have been tracking the past several storms this season, tracked the thermal trends and read the midwest storm threads, you'll know why. |

Well, my winter is going as it has been for the past few years: cold and dry, sudden burst of warmth and rain, rainfall ending before temperatures fall below freezing, repeat, repeat, and repeat.

Only storm that took a track perfect for snow was in October. That's not what I wanted

About 2 inches here so far total. Started out promising with the first flakes in late October. Since then we've had flakes in the air 3 times and close to 2 inches when nothing was predicted the first Saturday in December.
Now we've went back to our ways of the past 3-4 winters when it comes winter events in every direction from my area. Right now I'm looking at a major ice event covering the western side of the state. Also just up the road in Kentucky. I notice the winter advisories are once again all the way down to the Gulf Coast. I have no idea why but East Tennessee has just been devoid of winter storms the past few years in areas below 2000 feet elevation. I found the NCDC site that lists Snow/Heavy Snow Winter Storm/Ice Storm for my county. From 1994 to 2004 we had 31 events that fell under one of those headlines. In the past 4 years we've had 2. 1 in Jan 2005 and one in Feb 2006. We had no winter events of signifigance in the past 2 winters and none so far in what's elapsed of 2008/09. I don't know what happened to have us go from averaging 3 noteworthy winter storm events a year to only 2 events total in 4 going on 5 years but it's very frustrating for a winter weather lover. Especially since places like Houston, Shreveport, and Jackson Miss are getting worse winter storms than you are hundreds of miles north and over 1000 feet higher in elevation. Well, my winter is going as it has been for the past few years: cold and dry, sudden burst of warmth and rain, rainfall ending before temperatures fall below freezing, repeat, repeat, and repeat. Never mind, keep this winter please! This is the best pattern I've seen supportive of snow in the past couple of years. |

Well so far we had two little snow storms and it isn't even offically winter yet, or mabey it is Well, right now, it's "snowing" ice pellets and it's been so nasty that I actually called out for work. I work 50 miles from my house and I work really late nights, getting off work and driving home at 2am. Western Washington is so hilly that this weather really does cause transportation snafus. So I'm very glad I'm not driving in it, even though I DO have studded tires. -------------------- |

After an early and promising start to the season, we have been stuck in a nearly 3 week pattern of extended warm, wet weather with a very short break of near normal cool downs. While others north and west of us are getting the cold and snow I was hoping for! After a short cold snap Monday and Tuesday, we are going to get right back into this same weather pattern and its going to ruin my Christmas as it is suppose to be 65 and raining!!!!! Guess you can say its been a crappy Winter so far with no relief in sight!!!
Has anyone even made an effort to explain why the Bermuda High that is causing this Pattern keeps hanging on for so long and when it might shift back to the way it was mid-November to the first of December???? Been very cold, and snowy here in N MN for Dec. Many monthly snow records have, or are near being broken. Many of these records are from old stations. I'm talking 40-50, to as much as 100+ years old.

Now that the snow melted, we've been dodging floods. Yesterday, many roads throughout Western Washington were closed due to floodwaters, including a portion of Interstate 5. Truckers had to "detour" over the mountains. Can you imagine a 400+ mile detour?!?!?!?

About as I expected it to be. Besides the extreme cold snap of today & tomorrow, it's been decent here in St Louis. Now, however, as we get to mid-January, my thoughts are already looking foward to Spring storm season. I'm enjoying the winter, definitely, and don't want to wish it all away too quickly (because Winter always makes coffee more enjoyable), but I can't help but get excited as we get closer & closer. I've got plans to stay with relatives in SW Missouri, close to Oklahoma, where I'll be able to head out onto the Plains and witness some of the largest storms ever seen.
