Winter recap for CNY
Home / CNY Weather Blog / Winter recap 2009-2010 Winter recap 2009-2010 The winter season is officially over here in Central New York. While it's possible that we can still get snow in April (we average about 3.6"), the majority of the season is finished. Lets take a look at some of the highlights (in chronological order): Least snowiest November on record First measurable snowfall on December 1st (0.5") Coldest temperature -13° on January 10th Largest snowstorm 16.5" on February 25th & 26th 6th warmest march on record (38.7°) Least Snowiest march on record Overall stats: Snowfall for season 78.5" (-19.6" vs seasonal average) Average temperature (Dec-Mar) 27° (Slightly above average) Number of days below zero 9 (2 in Dec, 6 in Jan, 1 in Feb) This winter will go down in the books as a shorter than normal winter season. Winter really didn't start until early December but finished the first day of March. When winter was here, it was cold and snowy. So, despite the shorter season, we did well with snowfall totals during December through February. Our entire seasonal snowfall total came from those months here in Utica. The snow pack held up well for most of the season once it did start snowing. There were some bare spots in the Mohawk Valley in late December, along with late Janaury, but the snow held well for the majority of the season. The highest snowpack was immediately after the February storm here in the Mohawk Valley, but it didn't last long. Most of the snow was gone by mid March. The major story of this winter was what did not happen here in Central New York. The majority of the winter saw an absence of big snowstorms, while the Mid Atlantic got crushed by three major events. El Nino is to blame for this, as it developed and played a major role in the overall winter pattern. The subtropical jet stream was responsible for these larger than normal storms. We were too far north this season to take the brunt of the snow, and the majority of our snows came from lake effect. We were in a snowstorm drought until the end of February, but we did eventually get one big storm. El Nino can be used to explain the significant warmup at the end of the winter season. All moderately strong El Ninos have produced less snowfall in the month of March, and this year was no exception. See our discussion from our winter outlook for all the statistics in past years. A recap our winter outlook from November: Average temperature of 27° (slightly above average) snowfall totals between 85"-105" (slightly below average). Actual values: Average temperature 27° Season total 78.5" We hit the temperatures on the nose, but we are a few inches below the predicted snowfall range. It is April, and it is possible that we could make that up. It's not going to happen anytime soon, with highs in the 70s and 80s over the next few days. http://www.wktv.com/weather/blogs -------------------- western monmouth county avg snowfall 27"-30" Freehold boro snowfall 2008 - 2009: 26.8" 2009 - 2010: 74.2" 2010 - 2011: 61.1" 2011 - 2012: 8.5" 2012 - 2013: 38.2" |

This winter has been surprisingly good here... with that one storm I'm already very close to my average for the entire winter and should easily pass the average with the January pattern also apparently a cold one. I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that almost everyone's winter outlook busted around here in terms of snowfall.

Below average snowfall, but DTW's already passed its average for days with a 5"+ snowpack so...that's pretty nice.

Winter has been OK here. still a little bit of a let-down from this past weeks blizzard since I didn't end up with the 18" that was generally forecasted. But 10" is pretty much our Dec. avg. around here and January is looking more promising by the minute.

I hate the winter here in Ohio. Although I love the holiday season, winter just puts me in a down mood. I too can't wait for spring.

QUOTE How's Your Winter Going? Winter? What winter? Did I miss it already? When I started my counter of days of no snow since October, I jokingly thought that I might pass 80 days... sadly with 71 days and counting it's realistic that I could easily reach and pass 80 days. -------------------- Visit my weather website for the NYC area
