According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake measuring magnitude 7.9 was centered approximately 95 miles south of Neiafu in the South Pacific Tonga Islands Thursday, at 2:17 p.m. EDT. The quake took place in what is known as an undersea subduction zone.
Initially, tsunami warnings were issued as far away as Fiji and New Zealand. A tsunami of only 2 feet or less was measured and prompted officials to cancel the warnings.
There were no reports of injuries or damage from the quake on the 169 islands that make up the nation of Tonga located between Australia and Tahiti. The islands have a population of 115,000.
Over the past week or so, there have been multiple lesser earthquakes in the vicinity and at least one eruption by an undersea volcano earlier this week. Up to 36 undersea volcanoes are clustered around the island chain.
The volcano, Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, sent an emission cloud at times, as high as 50,000 feet into the atmosphere. Flights were disrupted and airlines placed on alert as clouds of smoke, steam and ash were shot into the sky. Both Airways New Zealand which manages air traffic and MetService issued warnings to aircraft flying in the area. New Zealand flights were forced to avoid the immediate area.
Volcanic ash cannot be detected very well by weather radar, but it can cause aircraft engine failure. In 1990, a commercial airliner lost all four engines while flying through a volcanic ash cloud in Alaska.
Winds earlier this week blew the emission cloud away from the populated island of Tongatapu. As a result, there was no danger to residents.
