I'm currently sitting on the couch with my seven-year old daughter reading "The Big Storm" about the April 1982 which hit every part of the country from coast to coast.

My daughter has asked Santa for a "Weather Report" for Christmas. What is a good weather station to get for a seven-year old?

What's considered "long range" for tropical systems? I've only followed them once they've formed into something (TS/Hurricane). But never as they are forming or forecast to be forming. Is it a 48-hour thing, a week out, two weeks out?
